I don't think you can use it as a backup device on Verizon post-paid anyway, since they I think they block using pre-paid phones on post-paid lines.

yeah, if they are releasing it only for prepaid use, that will be true. At least until you fulfill the usage requirements, which is 6 months of prepaid service, and the cheapest you can do that is for $75 IIRC. You don't have to actually use the phone, you just need to pay for minutes for 6 months. Then they will release the phone for postpaid use.
