Any unrooted people ?

Im on a mac. I don't need drivers. And i rooted my phone a with unrevoked a few times before. THis last try however it wont work.

I like mine the way it is as well. I have heard you do an awesome job but I am keeping it as it is.

Rooting is TOTALLY the way to go. Even if just for ability to wireless tether for free. I've used it a bunch of times for friends with ipods so they could get some service! My other favorite feature about rooting is the custom Roms. I like the battery indicator that shows my battery percentage without having to unlock the screen. Small feature but comes in handy.

I could go on with performance improvements with the kernel too but my reasons are custom Roms/kernels (gives better battery life, and improvements over stock), Set pcu (again for better battery life), and wireless tether hotspot.

By the way, probably 99 out of 100 VZW employees have no idea what root means, nor would they identify that yours is rooted. There are countless stories on the forums of people returning their phones for insurance replacement without unrooting.

The chances of bricking your phone due to rooting are almost non existent, unless you play with the radio and most won't do this so it's really nothing to be afraid of. You can only gain by rooting, but it's a personal decision. I'm glad I did. Wish I did it sooner.

The added plus is that once this phone reaches its end of life, there will still be developers out there making Roms from Android OS upgrades that won't be available for this phone in the future.

I've rooted and installed custom ROMs a few times but I always end up using the RUU and going back to stock. The only two root apps I would even use are ShootMe and Wireless Tether but I don't really need them. And as far as the ROMs go every time I try one out there is something it doesn't do that the stock ROM will. I need my phone for work and the stock ROM works with Exchange the best from what I've seen.

I've been rooted for a while, and a few posts back said something along the lines of making it feel like a new phone, it really does. you get excited for new roms, i was F5'ing on XDA like two weeks ago waiting for incredibly re-engineered 2.3. it gets really addicting. rooting has really exposed me to the inner works and also the performance of the phone. the best advice i can give to anyone is really READ before you do it. its a simple process if you follow the guides, and everyone on here is super helpful

I'm not but don't really have a great reason why that's the case.. I'm not really afraid of screwing up my phone or anything like that. I guess if I had to put my finger on one thing it would be that, while I realize there are some things about stock Sense that I don't like, I generally do like my phone the way it is and (knock wood) I'm not having any problems with the phone, so is it really worth trading some minor annoyances for a ROM with some nice new features but with bugs that limit full functionality? To a lesser extent, I'm quite sure that once I finally do go through with rooting (probably once the new Gingerbread ROMs work out the major bugs) I'll spend way too much time playing on my phone.. and I really could do without the distraction at the moment.

I haven't rooted, at least not yet. I want to do my research so I don't end up bricking my phone. I will probably root eventually though since I really want to run gingerbread and it doesn't look like the Incredible is going to get an update any time soon.

And as far as the ROMs go every time I try one out there is something it doesn't do that the stock ROM will.

This is a big reason why I don't plan on rooting soon. If I found a ROM out there that did EVERYTHING the stock ROM does and more, I'd root and flash the ROM. I'm not going to give up functionality just to run with the cool kids, and if I'm not changing my ROM I can't find a compelling reason to root.

So I tried rooting today, and got an error that I believe said valid error CID missing, or something along those lines. Any ideas on what to do?

Happy the way it is. Coming from a pre which I needed like 60 patches just to make the phone usable I very satisfied with the stock eVo.

Evo-lution

Followed the steps and did the hboot thing through device manager as it said to do, then launched evo3 and it did it thing and stopped at that error.

Android phone, I did notice that it wasn't under other devices in device manager like it was in the instructions i was following, instead it had its own category as android phone.

That was what I followed, but when you first open device manager, mine wasn't under other devices like it shows, instead mine shows up as android phone just like it does later on that screen. Everything worked and it said was installed successfully.
