Any way to customize the bottom icons/apps on the home screen?

Right now, I'm assuming like most of you, I have the Phone at the left, All Apps in middle, and Faves (which I don't even use) on the right. Can these be replaced with other apps that are used more often? I'm assuming rooting the phone would be necessary.

You can't modify them with the stock Sense launcher. But you don't have to root either. Just install another launcher at your choice (I'm using ADW and I have 5 shortcuts now). Search android market for "launcher". Have fun customizing.
