Anybody going to drop the Mate 9?

I kind of have dropped my mate 9 since I got the v20. I haven't used the Mate 9 since then, about a month now.

Really? What do you like more about the V20? I had the V20 prior and I loved the camera but beside that, I like the Mate 9 better.

I'm just at about 24 hours with the G6 and so far, I'd have to say the Mate 9 is the better phone (for me). The camera and waterproofing are points for the G6. Battery life, speed, screen size are all points for the Mate. An, if the Mate was waterproof and had the Pixel, S7 or G6 camera zit would be perfect...

I love this phone but I just saw an s8+ at best buy.. If there is a screen protector that does not suck and the phone has good battery life I will probably make the jump.

I won't. I adore my Mate 9. The battery life is insane, it's lightning quick, and it's super well built. I think the camera is definitely good enough, too.

One of my biggest complaints with the taller phones is that it takes my biggest problem with the current aspect ratio and makes it worse. When I'm viewing pictures and other media, I don't want the black bars. On the ultra-tall phones, they are actually dramatically reducing the dimension that's limiting how large you can display media. We kind of have to work the math backwards here since they measure the hypotenuse when they say 5.8 or 6.2, but the aspect ratio is 18.5:9 on Samsung's new phone.

a^2+b^2=c^2 is our formula

18.5^2 is 342.25
9^2 is 81
Which means the hypotenuse, in the ratio is the square root of 423.25, or ~20.57

So now we work that back to get the width of the phone:

6.2"/20.57 is ~.3, so that's what we'll use to get the rest of the dimensions of the screen
18.5*.3 is 5.55"
9*.3 is 2.7"

So, let's see if it works: 2.7^2+5.55^2 is ~38.1, and the square root of ~38.1 is ~6.2 (It's 6.1725... but we got close enough)

That means the width of 2.7" is the restraining dimension on the phone.

Now lets go to 16:9 aspect ratio and see how big of a phone we'd need at that size to get the same width. More maths:

2.7/9 is (you guessed it) .3
16*.3 is 4.8 (.7" shorter than your tall screened phone)

Now we figure out the triangle 2.7^2+4.8^2 = 30.33

And the square root of 30.33?

5.5"

Do the same for the smaller Samsung and you get 5.15"

If those numbers look familiar at all, it's because they are. Those are the sizes of the Galaxy S7 edge and the S7. Photos and videos won't be able to be displayed fully any larger on Samsung's new S8, even though it has a bigger screen. I thought both those phones were too small for my personal preference, which is why I went with the Mate 9.

And on my Mate 9, when I shoot 3:4 photos for full resolution, or take photos from my camera, I still get the black bars, so I don't want to exaggerate that.

Now all that being said, it would have been real nice to get an OLED display, and maybe the higher pixel density, and perhaps a better set of lenses on the back, but this phone runs so damn fast and efficient that I really have a hard time complaining about anything.

Samsung and LG can keep their faux-large screen phones. I'll keep the Mate 9.

Wow. Very detailed and fact-based response. I love the Mate 9 but am still going to give the S8+ a shot. I've decided to send the G6 back. It'd a nice photo, just not for me (a day ot better than the Mate 9 in my opinion). Anyway, I played with the S8+ at Best Buy Saturday and came away impressed. I know the battery life will be a step back ut hopefully everything else is as good or better than the Mate.

The Mate 9 is, by far, the fastest phone that I've ever had. What I like better about the V20 is It's lighter weight, the thinner feel, the lack of notification delays (the Mate 9 drives me crazy with one app I use a lot, even after doing all the suggested settings, often I wouldn't get a message notification until I actually opened the app to msg a friend, only to find out she had msgd me way earlier already), and the cameras. I've done a far amount of testing and, for me, the camera on the V20 is better. I always shoot in manual mode. The Mate 9 does have exposure modes (eval, center weighted avg, spot) that the V20 does not but since I shot manual/raw, I can adjust in LR.
Over all the Mate 9 is a great phone, just, for me and my needs, the V20 ticks a few more boxes.

Fred which app is giving you trouble ??

Definitely sticking with it ,even though s8 looks interesting hate how much Samsung locks down their phones.

I've been struggling to find a phone I'm happy with since the Note 7. I pre-ordered the SIDE Plus, and then someone suggested I at least try this. I've had it for about 5 days. I'm running Nova on it. I've used it for video camera, which is one of my key requirements, camera, which is another, and heavy use during the day for productivity, and consumption. I have to say, I'm starting to consider cancelling my order of the S8 Plus.

This phone's sheer speed and battery life is outstanding. The camera and video camera are both excellent. I'm not a camera expert, but for me this is on par with my S7 Edge and far surpasses the LG V20, particularly when filming moving objects, where the LG keeps losing focus on the subject. I had some video playback issues, but folks on this forum suggested VLC, and that sorted it out.

Listeners who didn't know I'd switched phones told me this is the clearest they've ever heard me, both from the handset, and bluetooth. I'm not seeing a huge downside here. EMUI once I have Nova on, with the updates that let me see notifications properly on the lock screen really doesn't bother me. Am I missing something? I used to think AMOLED and Quad HD were a must for a large screen. I'm not missing either.

And I just cancelled my order of the S8+. This phone is just awesome. The battery life is insanely good and on par with the iPhone 7 Plus on standby time. Huawei are learning and improving so quickly, it's truly remarkable.

S8 is not needed when ya own the Huawei Mate 9, it holds its own with any of the new phones coming out.

Interesting thread!
I'm loving my Mate 9 - my first Huawei, with HTC, Sony, Samsung and Moto as previous comparisons.

I find the battery and the camera exceptional. Speed too is great but there are niggles, just little ones but they are there, like blue tooth to my car audio now I have the Gear 3 watch.
I would have said my Note 7 was my best ever from all my phones - wireless charging & waterproof + pen is missing with Mate 9.
I think there's a good chance the Note 8 will get me back to Samsung by the end of the year, but the 9 has been a surprise that's for sure.

Ok. I used the LG G6 for a couple of days and really, really liked it. The 18:9 form factor (or whatever it's called) is weird at first but grew on me quickly. Now I feel like the Mate 9 is super wide. I also loved the camera. It makes me super excited to get the S8+. Even though I like the G6, I'm going to return it, wait for the S8+ (already pre-ordered it) and then probably keep it and the Mate 9. Maybe down the road I'll sell the Mate 9 on Swappa or something.

The funny thing is to me, it's like phones are getting to be like computers in that there really isn't a bad one. You pick your price point (low, medium and high), pick the attribute that's important to you and enjoy. This is quite different than a few years ago when each generation was decidedly better than the previous. Good times.

That is a pretty good point.... mate 9, Honor phones, oneplus 2, G6, Pixel, and of course S8 and the +... the only phone missing right now is HTC ... :( ........

i am sticking with the mate 9 best phone i have owned,
my previous phones were lg g3, lg g5 and then i stupidly got the lg 6.
the lg phones are great but battery life is always terrible. The lg 6 couldnt get me through a day so replaced it with the mate 9,
the only draw back with the mate 9 is that some apps will not run on the operating system but apart from that everything is great and overall a better handset than the lg.
the lgg6 cameras were slighty better and the water proofing were the only things i would have taken off the lgg6.
i will never buy another lg phone again, they just cannot get good battery life..
