I just got the app and subscribed for the $9.99 and can't figure out why with some albums I can download direct to "albums" but other albums only give me the option to download to playlist.

So the result is I have some albums under the "albums" tab and other albums under the "playlist" tab and I have to go fishing to find a specific album.

Confusing unless I just have no idea what I'm doing which is definitely not out of the norm!

Thanks!

The download option is totally up to the copyright holder of the music. If you can only make a playlist, the artist or composer does not allow the content to be downloaded.

Ok...makes sense, thanks.

So I guess my only option then for those artists is to actually purchase an album and plunk it somewhere else on my phone?

Pretty much. But, I have grown to kind of like the playlist option. I have all of my favorite music available and it's not taking up storage space on my phone. Now, if streaming over data is an issue, I can see where actually downloading would be a better option. Unfortunately, I think artists are still hesitant about letting people have digital copies of their work without getting paid specifically for it. I understand their concerns. The music industry still hasn't completely wrapped its head around the digital world.

Not being able to download the music would be a deal killer for me. Canadian carriers don't offer unlimited data plans.

If you can't download the music on the new YouTube Music service, why wouldn't you simply continue to subscribe to Google Play Music, where downloads are possible?

I totally understand. The ability to download music is up to the artist or music label. Whatever music service you decide to use, you will always find a few musicians who do not allow their music to be downloaded. I know Tool, Garth Brooks, and the Beatles have all had issues with music streaming services allowing content to be downloaded. Until a way comes along that guarantees royalties to artists in what they consider to be a fair way, this is how things are going to be.

HA, I was trying to download the Beatles Rubber Soul when I ran into this.

IIRC you can still download playlists and such on YouTube Music like you would on GPM.

They even said your uploaded music (your own) would transfer over -- https://www.androidcentral.com/youtube-music.

YouTube Music is a work in progress.

Sound quality right now is awful.

Rumors the Google Play catalog will be available to YouTube subscribers eventually.

I wouldn't subscribe yet... In fact, I'm shocked Google would introduce such an inferior product. Typically, you only get one chance to make a good impression.

No reason to move to YouTube from Google Play Music
