Anyone Else Not Happy With 2017 Smartphone Releases?

I can't find any smartphones that I am really excited about this year. They all have some significant drawbacks. It's really disappointing. I am kind of hoping the Google Pixel XL 2 knocks it out of the park, but I have serious doubts considering it is made by LG. Is anyone else in this boat?

It depends on your expectations. To me, the days of truly bleeding edge upgrades annually are dead and gone. Too many OEMs chasing the ghost of Apple's super profits of the iPhone 3G-4s days via hardware only.

Perhaps AR may change the discussion, but there's a lot of iterative upgrades now. I'm not sure if we've really gotten away from the two year cycle either. While the S8 has been good, how much of an upgrade is it for S6 users? I can see some S6 or S6E users waiting until next year. This will get worse come next year because of how awesome the mid range market was, where it'll be hard justifying parting with an Axon 7/Honor 8/Idol 4S if those devices age well...

It isn't really a case of diminishing returns for me. It is mostly related to the design of the phones themselves. They're either too fragile or too cheap looking/cheaply made. I look at my Note 5 and I see a phone with a flat display that isn't easily scratched or broken like new displays with curved glass on the front, relatively small bezels, capacitive buttons, and excellent build quality. There is simply nothing like it in 2017. I basically want new phone hardware inside a Note 5 body.

See, you reinforced my point. I was going to mention Note 5, users and say that unless the note 8 is super stellar, there is no reason to upgrade from a design or diminishing returns perspective. My GF has a Note 5 since launch and she has no intention of upgrading for another 2 years.

Yeah, but mine is kinda beat up at this point. It has been dropped a few times, was involved in a serious head-on collision, and now it's ability to pick up a wireless signal seems to be getting spotty. If it wasn't for that and the desire for better idle battery life, I probably wouldn't upgrade either. So far, the HTC U11 seems to be the best fit for me.

I am enjoying my S8+ and I enjoyed my G6. I am also curious to see what Apple will be doing.

I am impressed with things I've seen this year but I am not excited about any of the things I've seen this year. If that makes sense. But with security being such a big thing this year really there's not going to be a question it's either going to be apple or the pixel that wins it for the year. Don't forget that there are two Google devices coming this yearperiod one is a pixel meaning that Google is the OEM and it will probably be manufactured by HTC and the other is an unknown possibly up pixel or Nexus where Google would be the OEM and either HTC or LG would be using their own factories to kick out the hardware.

I don't really see it possible this year at least for very large improvements over last year flagships on any device. It's going to be incremental for now

Yeah, as a Galaxy S7 Edge Exynos owner, there really is nothing that can impress me at the moment. The huge 3600mAh battery, slim bezels and gorgeous design, seems to be hard to match, and even the newer Samsung phones have smaller batteries so I am waiting for Note 8 otherwise I'll get the Note 9 next year.

That said I can appreciate the new phones, e.g. I like the Infinity Display on the new Samsungs, like the HTC U11 design, think the OnePlus 5 is intriguing and can't wait to see the Pixel 2 from the big G.

Personally, for me I can't stand the design of any new phone coming out. Curved screens, sealed glass backs and bezeless designs with non removable batteries on a handheld device to my usage doesn't cut it..for what.. waterproofing that I have never needed... No Thanks.. I'll stay with my LG v20 till something better comes out.

Exact same sentiment here (except with a Note 4)! :)

Agree, I actually think many facets of phones have de-evoled for the sake of marketing and sales. And how about making a phone that actually survives drops so we don't have to wrap them in cases. Never understood how people obsess over the aesthetics of a device that is handled many times a day over function and practicality.

I'm keeping my S7 until it drops dead, these marginal improvements we're seeing in phones don't sway me enough to change.

I'm sorry you are not getting excited about anything! I feel like I had some measure of excitement for every device that has come out thus far! But, as other users have said, it depends. That excitement will often fade after a few days or a week; and I realize that I won't buy said device. There are still three or four that I'm really interested in.

Fret not! There are still some other devices coming out soon! Axon 8, for one! And we'll see how the Pixel fares!

You don't have to feel sorry for me, but Thank you for your sentiments..

The Axion could be a good device and I hope it is , but I have my last Google phone in my 6p and wouldn't even consider the Pixels.

My v20 will in all likelihood probably be the last "smartphone" I buy. It's not that I don't like them, or new technology, but I can no longer tolerate having to buy a phone that doesn't have the features I want, just for the sake of buying something new and hoping it does. I have effectively removed myself from the upgrading just for the sake of upgrading crowds.

When they offer me more than the v20 has, keeping the features it already has, I may reconsider getting excited about these products again. Unfortunately I don't see them doing this with their forced Planned Obsolescence scheme in full force.

Listening to my favorite music and listening to the Ota radio, watching my movies, taking excellent pictures, using my phone the way I use it everyday for everything I need it for , and knowing that I can pop in a spare battery in less than a minute to stay fully charged without having to be connected to the power cord when I am away from home hiking and hunting or having to send it off to have a new one put in after 6-8 months of heavy usage as I use my phone , and if by some chance if I should drop it, not to having to worry so much about it breaking as easily.. This adds real quality of life for me...

I guess I am just old fashioned this way..

I applaud your logic! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! It's a good plan to live by. Smartphones don't come cheap, and so I definitely agree with your choice to keep your V20 (an awesome phone, by the way) until you see a phone that truly gives you the wow factor.

Honestly, I don't really keep up with what's happening with all the phone releases every year. I bought and still use several such as my S7 Edge, Note 5 and a few iPhones (6S/6S+).

I'll likely get the next Note and whatever iPhone comes out in the fall and that's it for the next year or two.

A few weeks back, my car was totaled when someone rear ended me and my Note 5 went flying around the car. It survived perfectly in it's Otterbox case and I did have to go looking for the S Pen but it was OK and not broken.

Sorry to hear about your car. You ok?

Thanks. Yes, I'm Ok. I had my little girl in the car too. Both of us were ok. They had to pry the doors open so we could get out but the car did it's job at protecting the people inside.

I had almost the exact same thing happen to me. I hit black ice in February and went head-on with a Dodge Dart at around 55mph. We all had only minor injuries so we got lucky. My Note 5 went flying around and lost its S Pen as well. My brother and father never found the S Pen though. The UAG case kept the phone from any serious damage, but I think the Wi-Fi is acting up or something.
