Anyone have an idea when we might see Cyanogen?

I've never run the CyanogenMod, but know it's always been pretty popular. Does anyone know when we might see it for the GN?

Also, for previous Cyanogen fans, do you think it will be noticeably better than the ROMs we have now? Just curious.

The CM team notoriously doesn't give ETAs. Your guess is as good as anyone's but my guess is we'll start seeing alphas in the next month or two.

As I said in my OP, I've never used it before...would you expect it to be much better than some of the ROMs we have, or just another one? I've tried a few of the more popular ROMs (axiom, codename, kang), and they all run better than stock (I love them), but outside of applying themes, the ROMs themselves are for the most part, pretty much all the same. I'm sure that would piss off the ROM developers, but aside from a little thing here and a little thing there, they do not seem all that different.

Edit: Re-reading this makes me sound a little unappreciative of all the work the ROM developers do, and I don't mean it that way. I enjoy all the ROMs I've installed. I'm just wondering if Cyanogen is going to be something that will make me say, "WOW" after I've already been wowed by the others?

If it is anything like CM7 I'm not sure you will see anything vastly different. Most of the ROMS out now are using CM9 features already. You will probably see more mods/themes since its so widely used.

So CM based off of AOSP (Android Open Source Project) like most of the other ROMs including those skinned by the OEMs but they don't change the UI a whole lot. Mostly there'a focus on features while maintaining performance.

The CM team contributes a great deal to the community and you are already seeing bits of CM9 stuff showing up in other custom ROMs. The Android community would be very different without them for sure.

Now, is it better? That depends on what you are looking for in your ROM. When I wasn't using a Nexus phone, CM was as close as I could get the AOSP so it was awesome. When I got the Nexus S and now the Galaxy Nexus I could run stock so I moved away from CM and more towards pure AOSP roms that were tweaked for speed.

So it all really depends on what you want in a ROM. I would say that CM9 is something you should really look at because it's going to bring a great feature set but right now there are some great ROMs out there that for you, could be better than CM9.

Compared to other ROMs like AOKP, CM9 is still lacking some key features. They have made a lot of progress with under-the-hood enhancements, but still don't have an option for custom battery or battery percent. Still no lockscreen options, and the customizable notification bar widgets were only added a few days ago.

I love Trebuchet though (CM9 launcher), and CM9 has the best values for auto-brightness I've used. Probably one of the best/the best ROM for battery life, and unlike CM7 is extremely stable.

The ROM race is a marathon, not a sprint - and if the quality of enhancements in CM9 continues, it will be the ROM to beat one day.

I ran the unofficial CM7 on my Thunderbolt and probably ran that ROM the longest on that phone. There are plenty of ROM choices for the Galaxy Nexus and have been running Codename Android the last couple of weeks. When CM9 is out, I'm sure I'll give it a try. The CM team does some great work.
