Anyone know when the EVO will be upgraded to Gingerbread?

Which is exactly why I can see carriers/device manufacturers trying to hold some of these updates out if they have folks eligible for upgrades...trying to force them to purchase a new one instead of continuing to be happy with the same device.

Should there be regulations to force companies to allow software updates until a 2 year contract is expired? It just seems that they will do anything at Sprint/VZW/AT&T to make me feel like my device is no longer valuable, when in fact it should be able to receive updates until I've had it for two years...

....thoughts or arguments to this? I can see possible concerns about worrying that each low-end device continues to get updates, but should regulations at least protect flag-ship or highest priced devices when they are released to market???

Okay well I think everyone needs to give the manufacturers a little break. Remember that only one device that is out has Gingerbread currently. So by no means is HTC falling behind. I was told by both Sprint and HTC they are working on it, and would bring it to the Evo line because they were the flagship devices of Sprint. So again be patient, they say it will come. They didn't disappoint us on Froyo, so I don't see the let down outcome here.

Already has gingerbread. CM7 Nightlies ftw! w00t

*EDIT*
If you're thinking about rooting or not, think of it this way. Anything that can be done can be undone. Rooting has become so safe and perfected over the years because of the amazing devs in the community that it's virtually impossible to "brick" your phone now days. Just give it a go, and if you don't like it just undo it ;) There's no reason that any consumer should have to wait to get the latest and greatest ROM when we have a development community of real people that we can actually talk to that roll out our ROMs (BEFORE) our actual developers at HTC or Samsung or wherever do. Plus the performance of a rooted phone vs a stock one is mind-blowing. You'll wonder why you didn't do it so long ago.

That being said, I'm not responsible if you find a way to brick your device ;p

I agree, it's not totally overdue when considering that no others have received these updates, however consider the actual time frame. It appears all major coverage providers are trying to push back on consumers when it comes to benefits, and what's to stop them from pushing back HTC Sense and Gingerbread until June hoping most will either deal with it or buy a new device that ships with the most up to date software. Just feel like there is nothing protecting consumers after they make their initial purchase and get past the 30 days. It's like only we have to fulfill a contract length, while the provider does nothing but the most basic (data/voice).

Again from what my sources have told me, the update will not be pushed to June. It's going to be Feb or Mar according to them.

That would be great if Gingerbread is released Feb or March, and if it contained the updated Sense, wow. I would give props to HTC and Sprint for such a marvelous job.

Indeed.. Like I said i'm constantly getting information about multiple things, and importantly getting a lot for this. As I continue to gather more info, I will make sure that does get posted here.

The new Sense would be fine, but it should not be considered marvelous for a company to just start pushing out a software update that has been released from the parent company for 6 months. Whether there a lot of considerations or not, it shouldn't take that long, and I'm sure it is to try boosting enthusiasm for the new generation of devices coming out shortly.

Android 2.3 Update for HTC Evo 4G? - HTC EVO?„? 4G (Sprint) - Android Forums - HTC Community

I came across this myself, noticing a member with the name XDA-Developers. They wrote

"yeah i talked to HTC today and the tech support said in about a month or so...January!...they said google will send them the software and they tweek it for thier network and send it over the air"

The date of that post is Dec 30th, and that he spoke to HTC that day. Which a month from then would actually be just about Feb. So I will keep digging for you guys.

Also with some more digging a Sprint Admin basically saying the steps it would take for any major update to go through. He didn't mention the Evo not getting Gingerbread. So this could be good news.

Hopefully Gingerbread will be here sooner rather than later. Froyo was a major upgrade for Android, but I get a feeling that Gingerbread and Ice Cream will be huge.
