There is a software router called connectify that can be install on your PC. This is assuming your IT staff are s and you guys have admin level access to your work PC's and can run installs. Add a usb wireless nic to your PC and set it up to not broadcast a SID and set up WPA2 security. That should work. But again this is assuming your IT staff sucks and are not serious about security.

I have played with software routers in the past... that is an interesting idea. Thanks!

I am IT at my work, and I would like to do the USB tethering because A. our wireless network sucks B. my computer will handle the proxy authentication.
The problem with a rooted stock nexus 7, is that there is no option for USB charging only. It only has options to connect the tablet as a USB storage device or a camera, both of which pass data over the USB connection. You will note in the instructions for USB Reverse tethering the instructions say use charging only mode.

I assume that that is because it cannot send two different types of data over the same USB connection, and the type of driver it prompts your computer to install won't support a USB network connection. If you use charging only mode then a driver does not need to be used, and the App can prompt the computer to install a USB network driver.

I would love to reverse tether my Nexus 7 too! I use as little wifi as possible, and I have yet to find a router for my network that plays nice with my Nexus. If I use my RAZR MAXX HD as a hotspot, I get decent speed, but if I use my network WiFi it is spotty at best (and the wired LAN speeds are out of this world, and other devices work fine on WiFi, but not the Nexus). I would love to just plug in and go - no worries.

There are small usb dongles available at various places on the internet like ebay and newegg. You plug the device into your computer at work and install the software and walla!
You now have a mini hotspot working off your computer and lan connection. They normally only can connect one device and the signal is not very strong for long distance but are perfect for working right at your desk.

FoxFi will allow you to share your internet connection with your tablet via Bluetooth. You will need the separate tablet app for the tablet to connect to your phone.

That said... I have no words, really, about your determination to violate company policy. You're an adult...
