Anyone trust the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on the V20?

It's probably a matter of how OCD you are. Those that don't use screen protectors may not even see tiny scratches over time. I dont mean that in a bad way, in fact I wish I was like that. But personally, when I do find one small scratch, I will always see it from then on.

Even now, I'm on my second screen protector. It was almost perfect, but it's about 1 Mm off on one side so I really want to get a new one.

Is there anyone out there rocking their V20 without a screen protector and trusting the Gorilla Glass that's on the phone?

I have owned my V20 for about 8 months now. I eschew cases and covers. I have probably dropped the phone on concrete a half dozen times with no damage that I can discern. When I drop it, the back usually pops off and sometimes the battery pops out but that is it. At least a couple of times when I dropped it it landed on the face. Still no scratches. Gorilla glass is hard to scratch and harder to crack.

Having said all that, your mileage may vary. My wife has had a Galaxy S8 Plus with Gorilla glass 5 which suffered a small crack on the corner of the glass on its first drop, even though it was protected by a case.

My advice is that if you are worried about damage to your phone due to a drop, spend the money on the insurance. Yes, I think it is overpriced. Yes, I think the deductible is too high. But if you want to protect your $800 investment from catastrophic damage, it is really your only option.

Yes because screen protectors and cases are GAY as hell.

full trust. because I dropped it so many times and LG was clever to put them metal frame slightly above the display

can't believe it only has one little scratch.

Gay as hell? Whats wrong with that? I use both a case and screen protector, and I am not gay. I assume this was a joke.

I had it off for a week and developed fine scratches in the oleophobic coating which buff out but reappear when touch in screen area. I also developed a small scratch and don't know how so it is easier to scratch then my old phone which never had a screen protector. Oddly, never had on the G5 and the screen was mint.

He's not implying you're gay by using a case. He doesn't like the way they look with a case. I'll admit probably not the best choice of words to describe displeasure with the cased look but I get it.

Ok, I'm not personally offended by it, but I just get a bit mad when we still have these issues in today's day and age. Not my favorite expression, but I'm sorry.

That's correct. Sorry just my point of view.

I just see no point using a case with a military spec drob specified, aircraft metal build device sporting extra thick Gorilla Glass

Only thing I can think of: resale value.

The V20 is designed to take drops and the screen is protected by design.

The metal frame is slightly above the display, hence it will not have easy contact with the floor ,if dropped.

Other than just looks, it feels awkward swiping down from the top with a screen protection , you feel the edge of the display protection

Well truth be told, from personal experience Gorilla Glass 4 sucks when it comes to being scratch resistant. Besides resale value keeping a phone decent is somewhat of a personal preference. I don't like my stuff all but up and most cases do look rather bland and just add bulk. A V20 or most any other phone looks best in its pure form.

if someone using a case with a ****ty phone build of Glass(lol!) I can see the point, but especially with the V10 and V20, come on :)

Pure marketing, with no independent certification of durability. The spec itself is only for drops onto plywood over concrete, not "real world" use where it could be dropped any number of ways onto much harder surfaces.

My screen is flush, and I've yet to see any showing a lip around the screen. If yours has a lip, I'd suspect it's damaged. Most cases will give you that lip, but even then those few millimeters only provide extra protection when dropped into a flat surface. A small pebble can still impact it with any sort of lip.

Dude.. a V20 screen can sustain damage without a case because the screen is bezeless on the sides.

Sorry, I just got a bit wound up over that. Some people just mean it in a different way then you said, I just assumed you meant it different.

I know for a fact the Gorilla Glass 4 isn't scratch proof and is prone to scratches because when I had the screen protector that only protected the screen portion (not full coverage) the areas left unprotected somehow got scratches from normal use. I'm very confident that the phone is durable enough to survive minor drops and falls as I've seen plenty of drop tests. The metal back also is a relief because most phones nowadays are glass, and I'm seeing lots of people with cracked backs.

Did you not see Android Authority's drop test? They dropped it onto cement like multiple times until that real tall guy dropped it from very high.

LG also hired JerryRigEverything from YouTube to test the durability of the G6. As you can see, they are confident with their build quality and military spec they have these guys test them.

You just haven't looked closely enough. If you want to go with no screen protector go ahead. But don't fool people into thinking their screens won't scratch.

I agree with you. You really have to look closely for the scratches and have it under direct light and tilt it (direct sunlight or lamp). I bought a used phone from a seller on Swappa, advertised as "like new, near mint". When I looked at the screen, I could see the scratches. Doesn't affect the phone but since I have OCD, it does. Felt tricked and wasn't happy with it.

Gorilla Glass 4 & 5 from my experience scratch much easier and sooner, just takes one accidental scratch and you're done. Don't believe me, look at my previous posts on my Galaxy S8 Plus. Older phones with Gorilla Glass 3 were much more scratch resistant (Galaxy S4 & 5, Note 3 & 4).

I saw one drop test video, but I honestly don't remember who did it or pay much attention to those anyway. I have read up on the actual drop spec, and I stand by my claim that using said spec is a marketing gimmick. One, because the test itself doesn't translate well to real world use. Two, the results can be subjective in what constitutes a passed test. Three, there is no independent evaluation and certification of products that pass the test.

The test itself only involves dropping the device onto plywood, I'd say most any phone could pass that. Crack the screen but the device still functions? One manufacturer can still call that a pass, but another may not.

The way these mil-spec phones are marketed, they make you think they are dang near indestructible and should survive any drop without even a scratch. The V20 could very well be more durable than other phones, but I don't judge that based on the mil-spec claim.

I felt same way with my V10 and went screen protector and caseless for months. Grip on that is awesome. However...my daughter dropped it on the parquet floor in my office. Screen cracked. Sucked. I bought a dead V10 on eBay and replaced the screen myself. Point is, you never know what angle the phone is gonna take when dropped. With the V20 its just too slippery for me to go caseless.
