anyone try slingbox?

Practical experience

I use Slingplayer all the time. However with the player for Android it is stated on thier website that the older Slingbox's would not guarantee a good stream. Need Slingbox-HD,or Pro-HD.

I cannot speak about the Thunderbolt. But I can speak about the following:

  • Nexus One
  • Galaxy Tab
  • Slingbox Classic
  • Slingcatcher
  • Mac player 1.x
  • Windows player 1.x and 2.x

Although the company (and the Slingplayer Mobile player's startup dialog) claim that you must use newer Slingbox models, the Classic works OK on all the devices listed.

I would love to have someone tell me whether upgrading the Slingbox results in better/more efficient use of the available bandwidth to allow for smoother signals under marginal bandwidths.

I love my Slingboxes. I have the original SL100, and now two slingbox HDs. only problem is every time Slingmedia releases a new Slingplayer, it seems to be around the same time as a new release of product.

Slingplayer for phone works with all Slingboxes.
Slingplayer for tablet only works with Slingbox Pro-HD and Solo.

So if you have an old slingbox stick with slingplayer for phone.

Some dish network receivers have the slingbox built in. However I had one that didn't and I called and asked about it and they said they had an external one you attach via usb to the receiver, they had a 99 dollar rebate going on so I basically got it free. Plus dish has a free app that works with their slingbox so you don't have to pay for the slingbox app which runs 30 bucks. You definitely need fast home internet upload speeds though.
