I love the analogy but seriously!?...come on! Any previous phone I've had, cough lousy blackberries, have looked like an NHL ice surface after one hard shift within a couple of weeks.
Do you know how hard it is to scratch this version of gorilla glass? unless you carry it in a bag with diamonds, sand, 24 pennies, 36 small pebbles and a socket set, I think you'll be ok

For anyone with issues with the sensitivity of the capacitive buttons while using a screen protector, try this: Amazon.com: MediaDevil Magicscreen Screen Protector: Crystal Clear (Invisible) - HTC One (2 x Screen Protectors) - IMPORTANT: only compatible with the "HTC ONE", and not the other devices in the HTC One Range: Electronics
I was using a Spigen SGP Ultra Crystal and HATED it. It messed up the capacitive buttons, where it would usually take me 5+ times to hit it correctly. And the thing was a fingerprint magnet, so much that a light touch and there would be oils all over the screen.
Switched to MediaDevil (had used them before on a few iPhones, iPads, and the Nexus 7) and everything is great. Even though the protector is completely clear, it repels fingerprints much better! It's strange to say - but this protector just "feels" higher quality (it is perhaps a bit thicker but this could be a placebo effect). And, now I have zero problems with the buttons. Don't hesitate, try these!

well a screen protector won't help you with a crack....probably got dropped or sat on....lol I've seen you tube videos of people doing some pretty radical things to this phone and nothing....I can't even get mine to fingerprint up as much as my Evo 4g LTE used to...If I had a dollar for every scratched or cracked gorilla glass screen I've seen, I wouldn't buy a screen protector, because I could afford to replace the whole phone.

I put an SGP Ultra Crystal on and it looks fantastic. I am wondering if it has made the screen a little less responsive. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

no thanx lol mine is either in my belt clip (face in) or in my hands being usedSkid it face first across pavement and let me know how it holds up. I've learned scratches are easier to prevent than remove.
