I set up a Google Voice account and use an app called Groove IP Lite to make long distance calls. Voice quality is decent and it does work. More information on using the Nexus to make phone calls is covered in other forum threads.

I use Talkatone and it works very well to make/receive calls and text.

I chose to pick a new number from Google Voice rather than link it to my cell.

Yep... I use GrooVe IP Lite. It integrates Google Voice over WiFi. I also use MySMS for texting.

I also use groove IP. I found that I often leave my cell phone in the other room. This way, I can take my calls on my tablet without getting up.

OK answering my own question I set up Google voice and talka and it works really well but its initially on speaker so do I just need an earphone to go off speaker and just the n7 internal mike?

Not sure if you noticed but... There's no earpiece! The only audio output for this deceive is either thru the speakers or a headset/phones-- wired or wireless.

Use headphones or a headset. Problem solved.

That's what I meant-- earpiece in 3.5 jack or BT.

I tried this for a while with iPad. It kinda works but it's no phone really. When my 7 arrives, I'll install Talkaphone, but it's for emergency only.

I often use Tapatalk as well. It works very well. The only ly problem for me, some times is that the volume on the nexus could be a little louder. But other than that it works well for me.

Ok, I just tested this. I am using Google Voice with Talkatone for my text/phone option. I just tried using my Samsung ear buds with a built in mic, and it works just like it does with my phone.

Is there a way of using N7 as a phone in UK?
Talkatone doesnt work in Uk.

i too just tried talkatone on my n7 while connected to my phones hotspot and it worked perfect!

i totally want a nexus 7 with 4g built in now.

right now i just turn on my phones hotspot all day at work and use the nexus 7. i make very few phone calls anyway, so talkatone is perfect. i did pay $2 for a month of talkatone premium

edit - forgot to mention i am using a jabra bluetooth and it works perfect with talkatone
