Anyone using their Evo to tether to pc?

From what I have read around the various forumns Tethering is free only when connected to 4G, otherwise it is not. I cannot verify this however since I only have 3G, but for me I get the error 67 for userid/password.

pdanet and easytether work, but you will eventually have to pay for the apps to get https as that will stop working after a trial period.

The other option is to root.

I thought it was free, 3G or 4G, but there is a cap of 5g/mo? I also understood that when you use pdanet the carrier can not tell that you are using a computer with the phone because the program sends the same information the browser on the phone would? Am I wrong?

I use pdanet like a charm. I did not test the speeds but it is WAY faster than the free airport wifi. I use a mac so the usb tether that pops up when I plug the phone in via usb does not work, for me anyway.

i only have 3G in my area and im still able to tether......and i did not call sprint either to enable tethering........

It's generally a bit better, it seems that 3G speeds fluctuate quite a bit throughout the day.
