Anyone waiting for root?

Not interested in rooting. Used to be heavily into that stuff, but the only thing that's even attractive to me and that requires root is certain aspects of theming. But substratum worked without root in most aspects and honestly, I didn't buy a Samsung or LG, so the desire to totally rework how everything looks just isn't there. The Pixel phones already have both the best software and, imo, the best looking software... Especially with the automatic dark theme in the launcher.

Root now, provides no benefits and comes at the cost of major quality of life issues, such as breaking some favorite apps, messing with the quality of the seamless update functionality, etc. As far as blocking ads goes... apps with unruly ads and no way to buy them away should be uninstalled. My thought is the ads are well done, in which case they're not noticed, there's an in app purchase or paid version that gets rid of them or the app goes away. I'm definitely not going to compromise my security and quality of life just to rip off the dev... Especially given the likelihood that the app probably sucks to begin with. I have exactly zero quality apps that serve ads.

Remapping the squeeze feature would be great. The problem w/many custom ROMs is you'll be dealing with bugs & broken functionality in other areas of the device. I'll have to weigh if I'm willing to go back to that.

I have been using my rooted pixel now for about a week and the only thing I've needed root for is AdAway. And that's honestly a really big need. I can't stomach surfing the web without something like it. I have zero problems paying for apps if they're worth it but the wide internet absolutely sucks without content blocking.

I use Private Internet Access and they have a DNS server that blocks the usual suspects so I'll try that too see how it works. In either case, the Google version just makes more sense for me given that I'm totally cool with my current pixel and there's no urgency to getting a new one.

I used to be totally into rooting and all that until I got a Moto X (2013). Once I got that phone, I stopped caring. I want my phone to work the way I want it to without having to root it.

A lot of disclaimers in that article.

I think I might wait for Google to add it to System UI Tuner. :)

It's just as unstable as everything included in System UI Tuner. Google even gives a pop-up when you open System UI Tuner.

I was being facetious. What I really meant was that I would wait for Google to make it an option in Settings. Probably never happen, but whatever. :)

I use to root but ever since 6p i stopped rooting.

Here is what i did with root:
titanium backup, ad blocking, greenify, features on tasker, launcher backup and other reasons(screen recording etc).

Here is what i didn't do with root"
I have always been Nexus/Pixel guy so many of the reason to root is out of the windows for me like removing bloats, custom ROM to remove skins.
I never did advanced things like installing custom kernel, under clocking, overclocking etc.

Here is why i stopped rooting:
1.Backup in Android got better. Lot of my apps backup to google. I dont even need to setup my device after an install. google now/pixel launcher backup your screen layout.
I still have few apps which dont backup but for that i have non root backup app like helium.

2.Android N and Android O is better at battery and freezing app in general(you can now disable background activity on older apps). Permissions can be denied if app drains battery.

3. google now/ pixel launcher now backup screen layout. More features that needed rooting are now part of android. google started removing more bloats from nexus/pixel

4. I started buying apps with no ads and have youtube red so now no ads on youtube or play music.
gmail tucks away ads on promotion tab so thats better. the only apps that shows ads are chrome, gmail, google search and maybe some apps.

5. rooting became hard to manage. rooting means manual update and rooting again(especially with monthly security update).

6. I needed android pay.
