AOD notifications

Is there a way to control which apps put a notification on the always on display? Many times I don't see my Gmail icon because there are other ones showing that I don't care about. For example I don't want to see CNN on the aod, but I do like it in the notification bar.

Only way of controlling this is to go into each app's notification settings and enabling/disabling 'Show on Lockscreen' options, I'm afraid.
