App Info - 'Show notifications' auto-enables

I have a Note 3, a little under 3 years old now, running Lollipop 5.0.
For a while now, certain apps where I had unchecked 'Show notifications', will automatically reactivate notifications. It's not all apps, just a few that I'd prefer would not. This is not something that started after my most recent update. In fact, I don't recall this starting after any update, but just.... started randomly.

Any thoughts as to how to fix this? Ideally without a factory reset, as I do play a few games I'd prefer not to loose my entire progress of.

Welcome to Android Central! Have you been selecting the Reset All App Preferences option recently? Or does this happen after those apps are updated?

No, I have not used the 'Reset All App Preferences' option, nor does it coincide with updates to the apps themselves. I have concluded though that it does happen when I restart my device.

I vaguely recall this happening with some older Samsung phones -- can't remember if there was a solution. You could try reinstalling the firmware using Kies or Smart Switch.
