App Updates

How do they work? When I download apps, I leave the check mark for "updating itself" off. Yes I still get update notifications. Howcome? Are there two different ways apps update? One in the app itself and one by Android?

As I understand it, leaving that option checked means the software will automatically download and update itself without notifying you first. You still have to approve any permissions. Leaving it unchecked means you only get a notification and have to proactively approve the download and update.

Would letting the apps update itself use more battery since it's constantly checking if there's new updates?
