Why do Android OS and Kernel always seem to be the highest battery consumers?

For me my highest battery usage is the screen then apps

I have the HTC One (M7) and "screen" doesn't appear as one of the battery users (it used to on my Samsung phone). Like now it's Phone Idle 12%, Golf Channel 19%, messages 19% Chrome 15%. No screen, but you know it uses power. Weird.
