Appear to have experienced a ghost restart

I woke up this morning to my phone displaying the message that my data isn't turned on, which usually only shows upon boot up of course. I can only assume this means at some point in the night my phone shut off and rebooted. What gives?

It is a Verizon model, it is rooted but otherwise all stock software is intact. It had about 70% battery when I went to bed and was plugged in so I don't think it died and then rebooted because of any power issues.

This has me a little worried, otherwise I have enjoyed this phone but I feel like if random restarts becomes a recurring issue it will be a slippery slope!

Open a terminal emulator window (https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...details?id=jackpal.androidterm&token=AxiMN1rJ) and type the command: "uptime" (without the quotes).

It will tell you when your phone last rebooted.

You can also check your phone's uptime (time since last boot) in Settings » About phone » Hardware info.

I've never had a spontaneous reboot on the G4 but I've seen my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet do it quite a few times.. it always seemed to be related to buggy app updates.

Before the last update I would get what on an iPhone would be called a respring. Basically it looks like a reboot but the uptime doesn't reset and you don't get the powered by Android boot screen. Happened a handful of times that I caught when I wanted to use the phone, don't know how much it happened.

At this point, having happened only once, I doubt anyone here can do more than make some guesses. An app that got itself in a weird state could cause it, something weird in an app upgrade could cause it, an sd card going bad could cause it, etc...

Fortunately, it only happened once and you may never see it again. If it started happening with any regularity, I would remove the sd card, reboot into safe mode and see how it runs.

I don't have an SD card in it, never have.

I'll see if it continues to happen though and report back......
