Application Data Space Low

Ok,
so I got the same error on my HINC so I have spent the day browsing the looking into this problem. Seems strange that everyone seemed to start having this problem about a month ago.

Thanks to another forum for pointing out the report of low space is actually the data/data folder which can only be accessed via root with root explorer. Seems this folder is limited to 150mb is size so go figure mine just happens to be 137mb currently. Poking around in the files I found what I dreaded was the problem may actually be correct. It appears ANGRY BIRDS is gobbling up the majority of this space. Thanks to all 3 versions being loaded it appears to be taking the bulk of space up.

Where most of the files on other apps in this folder are 500 or less, A.B. runs 1749823 for one entry. A.B.Seasons appears to be the big grabber of the 3 though. There is an entry for each day, avg is 8000+ per file under the files folder.

So now the dilemma, I only have #12 & #16 to get to perfect on Seasons to complete so deleting is like so hard to do. Can someone confirm my findings per I am far from any Android OS expert.

Meantime, I was able to gain a little more space by using "apps to sdcard" program to move everything possible to the SDCard. For now the message has gone away however I doubt it will be gone for good after reading other forums.

Hmmm...I see that mine is 133mb so that explains it for me as well. Problem is that root explorer doesn't seem to make it easy to sort by size inside the data/data folder. Any suggestions for that? It would certainly make it easier to do some cleanup in there.

Apps to SD

I downloaded the apps 2 SD card for my Dinc. It found only one app that I hadn't already moved to my SD card. However, a recent update now looks at the app cache and allows you to clear with one touch of the finger! It works great. After seeing how well it worked, I splurged ($0.99) and bought the pro version...no ads and free updates!

Could this be the solution to false low memory problems ? I hope so!

Sorry ...I have to bridle my enthusiasm a bit for App 2 SD. The pro version reports what apps are on the sd card differently than the manage apps program on the phone itself.
Not truly a big deal, space management and cache clearing are the main reason to get this.

I still think the problem is the data/data folder and Angry Birds Seasons having so much stored in that folder. I completed #12 so all I have left is #16 to get to 3 stars.

Once completed I will consider deleting it to see how much the data/data folder clears up.

Update on App 2 SD

App to SD ACCURATELY lists all apps that can be put onto the SD card and prompts to ask if you want to move them.

Great App ...5 stars. Works great now. Probably was user error. Great feedback from publisher

Well, the ugly appears to have happened to my phone overnight. Some sort of update appears to have nabbed the last bit of the data directory. The phone was stuck in a HTC splash screens to the droid eye reboot loop. I had to pull the battery to get it to stop saying "DROID" every few minutes while at work. I tried later to clear the cache, recovery mode but all that seemed to do is loose my apps etc. It is still getting the space error. Now finally at home I was going to try to boot it via unrevoked to get my root back so I can access the data/data directory. However on holding the down volume and powering up, it vibrated 3 times and then never booted. This is pathetic.....

....Got it to boot again, factory defaulted everything and I am currently reloading the basics via lookout and hopefully appbrain after this. Minus AB Seasons this time....

I experienced a similar reboot loop about a month ago with my unrooted phone. I was unable to access the UI so my only recourse was to perform a factory reset--losing many of my settings. Very frustrating. See my posts in the thread "Incredible is rebooting all the time". For some odd reason, the URL doesn't want to link here properly.

In my case, although at least part of the problem was due to application data space being low, even after the factory reset, the spontaneous and looping reboots didn't completely go away. I ended up having to replace the phone altogether.

That reboot loop can also be due to a widget not loading correctly. I've never seen that as a result of the "application data space low" notification.

I think you're over reacting a bit. The "most" you're referring to, are apps that don't involve so much animation as angry birds. All the stuff that doesn't actually render so much. Crush the castle is about 1.2 MB (go to pref, friendly sizes, so you don't get everything in bytes), Legends of Zenonia is around 1 MB, Dungeon Hunter's .SO file is 7.27 MB. Those daily files you see, I only have 5 for whatever reason. But keep in mind, that's only 8 kB.

Granted, 1 meg is considerable when you've got hundreds of different apps and only 150MB of space...the fact that it has a limit on that folder is definitely the problem here....moving apps2SD frees some of this precious space up.

Also, I've had this problem long before a month ago. If you search, there's other threads dedicated to the problem.

but it was the largest user of memory in the data/data folder. Reminder, this is not normally the folder for programs to be storing their bulk of programming, however I think there is a programming error with Angry Birds Seasons. It keeps separate folder for ever day and items in these directories are way bigger than any other listed in the folders found in the data/data directory. If you have a rooted phone I am sure you can verify this.

I did have to do a hard reset and even had to visit VZB per I could not figure out all the settings I needed to put back in that *228 does not program up. This is found in the ##778. Since I am not familiar with rules of this forum concerning the settings found in this part, I refrain from going into much deeper. Only that I missed one that enabled me to get regular phone calls and messages. VZB fixed it though, and I have not had the space problem since not reloading Angry Birds Season and Beta however everything else and more is now loaded to my phone.

My theory is that the latest update to Maps is creating a cache of map tiles. You can open the maps application and clear the cache.

Hopefully at some point maps will have an update that allows caching to the sd card (or emmc).

After rooting and flashing cyanogenmod 6.1, I have had no more "app storage" problems.

Another great idea is to delete all your media apps (magazines and newspapers and what not), and subscribe to them at reader.google.com and then install the new google reader app. A lot of magazines actually load their entire articles into reader, while others excerpt with browser links. I used to consider dolphin mini to be the fastest browser, but after flashing cyanogenmod 6.1 all the browsers seem fast. Especially with adfree.

googletalk doesn't sign in for me either when i get this frustrating error... I have to do it ALL the time... and my facebook only using 2mb and i still get it... i corrected the contact issue which had 20+mb but it has still popped up since... HMMM

Bump.... I just did a factory reset on a friend's rooted Incredible, and as soon as it came back on, the Application Data Space Low message popped up. There are no apps loaded on the device except what it shipped with. I went into app storage and noticed that a factory reset doesn't clear the cache on these phones? I had to delete dialer history data, facebook data... Am now running Titanium Backup and it's taking forever (at 27% at an hour into it). His phone is no longer under warranty. Have there been any solutions found for fixing this issue?

I think we're all hoping the supposedly forthcoming Gingerbread update for the DINC will help/solve this issue. I'm completely sick of it as it pops up now weekly for me and i need to either clear data from a bunch of programs or delete programs to get rid of it. Yesterday i noticed it was my weather programs - weatherbug and then the weather channel app would trigger the low on memory error about 5 seconds after launching the app. Clearing app memory from those programs immediately got rid of it, but this is getting ridiculous.

Does the DINC2 have this issue too?
