Application installer has stopped - phone is black after update?

How can i save my data - contacts and photographs after phone crashes? software update failed and phone reads 'unfortunately application installer has stopped'
I cannot lose the data as the photographs are extensive and cover the first three weeks of my newborn daughters life. please help.

just got the phone had it update and then got unfortunately application installer has stopped have tried manual rest did not work has anyone got answer?
