Apps minimize to homescreen immediately or within seconds of opening. Happens on all apps : phone clock calendar chrome Gmail GoogleGo search maps YouTube settings.

Cheap acatel 1x phone.
Oreo 8.1 Purchased Nov 11, 2 wks ago. Barely used. Haven't installed anything. Have allowed auto updates

I have read to :
*stop battery savers. Did not work.
*disable pic n pic. Is draw over other apps same as pic n pic? No pic n pic listed
*check for match of firmware /hardware. No clue how to do this.

I HATE this phone and GoogleGo. Lost my Samsung

Welcome to the forums. Have you already tried safe mode? Did you originally set it up from a previous Google backup?

Found these instructions for a similar device.

After booting in safe mode see if the same problems persist. To exit safe mode just restart the phone normally.Screenshot_20191125-222247.jpeg

Welcome to Android Central! Do you have a screen protector on? If so, take it off and see if that makes a difference. A poorly fitted or installed screen protector can cause phantom touches, and if those touches are near the Back or Home buttons, that could cause apps to close without warning.

No, totally different.

No pic n pic listed
Maps minimizes to a small inset on the homescreen. That's picture-in-picture. I assume you mean "minimizes to where it can't be seen, except as an icon".

It's like Google Lite - a small system for small, less powerful phones. Don't expect it to fully replace Android.

No screen protector. I tested to be sure I wasn't touching anything so set on table reopened and did not touch phone. Still happened.

I read something about how phone set up to handle memory. Assume rom. That seems a logical hypothesis but no idea how to check . Or to fix. for that matter

Ty for clarifying

Yes, I have been told my phone has a watered down version . I am seriously considering having my old phone set back up since I have it back now. I am using it like a tablet anyway.

I agree with Javier P, the first thing to test is Safe Mode, in case a 3rd party app you installed is causing the instability.
