Hi as i moved from apple to samsung i have now read that you can not install apps onto an SD card if this is the case then i am considering taking the phone back,

Not possible to do on a stock phone. But typically after root it's been possible to swap your external memory for internal memory on other Galaxy devices.

Bit mis leading they should of advertised the 16gb as a 8gb, and the SD card is unusable for apps just music and films, looks like i shall be taking it back ,

Even with root apps2sd is not practical option. You can push some data to the card, but that is very hit and miss. You then have to start from scratch with the app for any market updates of the app where data was pushed.

In other words, apps to sd is not really an option.

Correct, you can also do a directly bind that should work with root etc, and make the external your internal storage but its a trade off that some may not like.

Yep, for most users apps2sd with previous GB and earlier OS was kind of problematic to some degree, but even to the more savvy modders JB and app displacement to the external card is more pain than gain.

Keep in mind this applies to any Android phone running Ice Cream Sandwish (4.0) or Jelly Bean (4.1, 4.2). Google chose to do this ....

All operating systems use space that reduces the free space available. A 16gb iPhone doesn't have 16gb of free space. But at least with the S4 you can add a sd card to save music and the 1080p videos (a 20min video will be over 2gb) you record on the phone, so all of the internal memory is free for apps and not shared with music/photos like the iPhone.

Not Apples to Apples (pun of course intended) since referring to app space. Apple offer 32 and 64 gb, which is for most carriers. All that space can be used for apps or not. The issue with the 16gb is absolute, since only 9gb for apps. No consumer option there.

The root cause issue seems actual app space and the consumer option to get a bigger size if they want. Samsung has launched with a device that brings to bare this concern and carriers will exacerbate the issue if only offer the 16gb.

just me being picky i have got a nice 32gb card in it so will use that for vid and music, cant seem to put the phone down so nope going back to apple,

The 16gb is the reason I did not get the Samsung Note 2 and they did not bring that out with a 32gb version and I won't be getting the S4 unless the bring the 32gb version to VZW. I guess my 32gb S3 will suffice for a while long until some phone comes to VZW with at least 32gb with slot for at least 64gb and a removable battery.

iOS takes up 0 bytes?
