Apps that are safe to remove once rooted

so now that I have rooted, I'm trying to rename some of the files that Cory had mentioned. I am in root explorer, system/app, long press on blockbuster, and this is what I get, "Blockbuster_Stub_v0_2_build_12-unsigned-signed.apk cannot be renamed because the file system is read-only"

any thoughts?

if you are rooted and using root explorer there is a button at the top that you must say, it will toggle you from Mount R/W (Read/Write) - Mount R/O(Read Only)

Am I not able to do this with Astro? I get "Insufficient permissions" when I try to rename the same file, or any others. I'm rooted, SU is in my app drawer and I've power cycled the phone...

I've used adb to change Bing so I can use Google but I don't understand why I can't make the changes with Astro?

ETA:
D/Led SuperManager and am now able to rename files at will.

FWIW, under EB01, I removed 55MB of bloat and sent it off to my sdcard using root explorer. System running very fast, screens jump, battery life is excellent. Not running any themes or custom roms, just a de-bloated EB01.

Aside from the apps listed at the beginning of this thread (and their eb01 counterparts), car and desk cradle are gone, media hub is gone, anything with drm in it is gone.

I want to remove Kindle, but the file name is not redding-7648-signed-zipped.apk.

The file I see is Kindle-1.0.2-OEM-SingleSign.apk

Any Ideas?

Mike

So i finally rooted and have been working through the list of Safe Apps to remove.. I have a question though.

I renamed those apps with the "old" added and they are gone out of my drawer. Should I rename the "odex" ones too? And are those safe to move to SD also?

And.. to move the files to the SD card all i do is long press and select move and then navigate to the SD file and paste, correct?

Thanks for the help.

I believe renaming the apk files will suffice, but the odex files couldn't hurt. You may want to try adrynalynes debloated deodexed rom before you invest too much time and effort. It will accept themes and allow for more extensive modding. Alternatively you could jump to super clean [rom] and put what you want back with the patches he provides. It's a cleaner set up all around.

took the plunge and finally rooted today (woot!). renamed the apk's in cory's post and now I don't dread opening my app drawer. lol

I saw that one and slapped .old on it.

no problems for me at all. Kindle gone.

My only remaining concerns are 3g mobile and allshare if they are safe to .old

I don't know off the top of my head but I would use the search option in root explorer to find browser. It should show you the file if it's still there.

Hi Dirk,

I used the 1-click root process you provided here <http://forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-rooting-roms-hacks/33899-how-root.html>. I believed it worked, although I'm uncertain how to best check if it did. Assuming it did, how do I next acquire Froyo 2.2. for my Verizon Fascinate? I'm a complete novice with smartphones, so please assume I've little knowledge and competency with such technical matters.

Thank you!

The easiest way is to follow this sticky.

It doesn't require you to have done anything to your phone previously, not even root, because it includes everything. Read through the steps and make sure you have everything down before you start. If you have any questions, ask in that thread

Hello,

I first want to thank you in advance for taking the time to consider this issue. I am relatively new to androidcentral (as this is my maiden post)--and nothing like sheer misery or stupidity to get the ball rolling.

I'll try to keep this as concise as possible while still listing all the symptoms/actions, and I apologize in advance if my tech vocabulary is not up to snuff (which surely it is not):

A couple of weeks ago I successfully rooted my phone and have since been working through titanium. Unfortunately, during that time I failed to back up any of my system files or apps. You can probably see where I'm going here but I deleted a system file thinking it was bloatware and the following occurred:

1. My phone no longer has any signal--no calls or texts
2. The date and time are off.
3. If I attempt to make a call I receive the following msg: "The application Phone (process com.sec.android.app.dialertab) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"

Since that time I tried a factory install (which worked--new phone presentation and no contact list etc) but: a. the phone is still rooted and b. I still have the same problems #s 1-3 as above leading me to believe that the deleted file, whatever it was, is still missing.

I've been fishing around the xda forums and android central and as certain as I am the answers are there, I simple lack the vocabulary to fix this thing myself without "cookie cutter" directions.

I think I've listed everything. Again much thanks and if you need any further color please let me know.

Kind Regards,

S

What were you on Eclair (2.1) or one of the Froyo (sc) leaks?

Well really no matter, flash one of the odin packages with wipe and that will kill everything and return it to stock. I will find the link

I would say flash Full Stock Froyo Leak+root+Froyo Clockworkmod
EB01_DXC.tar from here http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...tom-roms-w-root-clockwork-updated-3-25-a.html
that in Odin.... Also I may wait and hear from someone else but that is what I would do....If you dont know what Odin is this tells you just follow everything as followed if you choose to do this. Im just saying that is what I would do. but if you wait a lil bit someone with a definitive answer will prob be around shortly...

Doing a factory reset doesn't restore files, it simply clears all data. Check out the stickies for "returning to stock". You will need to flash a stock ROM with odin, then you should be good to start over

Good catch, I was thinking that factory install meant flashing a return to stock that did not take, not the factory reset...

help with everything...

Hi guys,

I've been 'rooting' (no pun intended) around this forum now for about an hour or two. I just got a fascinate today and I've been trying to get all that preloaded garbage off of my phone..

I went through the steps below to begin the process (I think)...
Note: First time rooters may take up to 10 minutes! Do not panic, just be patient.

Tip: I recommend extracting the files to your desktop or the root of your hard drive.

For DI01, DL09, EA28, or EB01:

1. Download and extract (v1.1 has device detection):

1-click-root-v1.1.zip

2. Enable USB debugging and Stay awake under Settings > Applications > Development, leave the phone in the Development window
3. Plug your phone into your computer
4. Double click root.app inside the 1-click-root folder, confirm install (process should take about a minute)
5. When Superuser.apk is finished installing, reboot your phone
6. Close terminal

Congrats! You now have root.

Anyways, that all seemed to have gone smoothly, I think. I'm not very tech-savvy. I want to start getting this blockbuster, bing etc stuff off of my phone, but now that i've started this process I dont know where to go next. I know im supposed to change the .apk files to .apk.old...but do I do that through my computer, or through the fascinate itself? I really cant underestimate my naivete in these matters, so any help (in the most basic and elementary format possible) would be much appreciated.

Thanks a bundle!

Welcome to Android Central.. Hope this answers your questions.

You will need to rename your apk files using either Root Explorer (paid app from the market) or Super Manager (free app from the market)...

Download the app of choice and grant it root (r/w) access - this must be done prior to your attempt to rename or you will not have success...

Navigate to the system/app folder and go to work renaming your files..

If you have gone through rooting your phone it is worth the time to flash a debloated ROM on your phone (when you are ready) many have chosen CommROM - but there are others.. This will free you of the bloat and give you other options and modifications not available on a stock ROM.. (when you are ready).
