Apps that are safe to remove once rooted

another thing i want to ask is that the widgets and odex files can you move them
removing all these apps in the OP will increase battery life and speed?

I'd really rather remove the app if possible. One less thing taking up space + memory since it seems to run on startup. Plus I can't seem to find the apk for the Nuance voice command app as well.

Edit: I found both of these files names in the XDA Forum...

"3G Mobile Hotspot" = MobileAP.apk/odex

is it ok to remove/rename the 3g mobile hot spot since i have the free wireless tethering

I am using Bloat Freezer (which by the way BAD @$$ for a noob like me). I was going through the list and I have my voicemail going to google voice. So can I freeze the Voicemail and the vvmService files?

Glad you are enjoying Bloat Freezer :D I would guess that Voicemail would be safe to freeze, but I don't have a Fascinate so I can't say for sure.

has anyone tried to rename/remove the music player and see if it still starts up when you put the 3.5 mm in

I've removed VisualVoiceMail.* and VVMService.* and haven't had any issues.

How are you moving these apps? Each time I get a Read only message when I try to move or rename them using Root Explorer. I can sometimes see a file move, but it still shows up and is active under applications.

If you're getting the read only message, make sure you click the "Mount R/O" or "Mount R/W" button on the top right in Root Explorer.

Many thanks for the reply. Got it, after much trial and error. Moved the listed apps to a folder on the sd card, dl'd the google search app.

I am amazed at the speed of this machine without those items on there - even the swipe on the screen to change them is blazing.

So I'm rooted, with bloatware booted. Now what's the next fun thing to try?

Naturally the next step is a custom ROM if you're comfortable doing so, or aren't too attached to TouchWiz. :)

Lead me to a link. I use LauncherPro (first app my son suggested I get) so TWiz means nothing to me. Just so I don't lose all the programs and apps I've already put on the machine.

can i unstill all the bloatware apps that come up in the task manager? so it frees up more space for some reason i feel like i am still using a lot of space

I'd be careful with what you're removing and/or renaming. Like Cory said in the original post, you have to be very careful, because removing some can brick your phone. The ones listed are the only ones that have been proven to be safe to remove or rename without any bad side effects.

even in the task manager?
i deleted them in super manager

is there a way to easily rearrange the app icons. now that i removed all the bloat they're scattered over 4-5 screens. maybe even alphabetized?

I actually rooted my phone just yesterday and was using Root Explorer to just delete things like the blockbuster app he mentions. I didn't realize it would mess up updates. The phone works fine otherwise. My friend has an unrooted Fascinate. Could I just use the script in the first post of this thread to backup his files onto my sdcard if I put it in his phone?

Yes that should work, in the future I would suggest you freeze them with my own app, Bloat Freezer, or Titanium Backup Premium. Freezing keeps them from running and makes them invisible to your phone, then with one click you can defrost them and they are right back where they were, same concept, just easier than doing it manually.

Note that when you put them back they need to go in /system/app of course and the UNIX permissions need to be reset on each apk correctly.

Hey thanks. That sounds kind of difficult though. I'm not really that skilled. Plus, I think I deleted something out of the lib file too.

Is it easy to just reset the phone to factory settings? I already moved all the apps that aren't factory to my sd card. Is there maybe a file somewhere I could transfer that has my contacts? It'd be nice to not have to input those again. I think backup assistant copied them somewhere but I don't really pay attention to that. I figure if I reset to factory and then reroot and get your bloat freezer that'd probably solve my problem. I'm not really looking for the fastest phone possible. I just didn't like looking at all the clutter. A little ocd here.

there are many ways to save your contacts
Gmail syncSettings>accounts and sync>enable auto sync>at the bottom select your gmail account>select features you want sync'd
then go to your gmail account and they will be the contacts section

export to SD

from contacts screen>hit menu button>more>Export/Import>export to SD

backup assistant
settings>accounts and sync>backup assistant>it will ask for an account pin> then hit backup
(pin can be retrieved or set up from your verizion wireless account on their website)

if you factory reset you will not loose root (i dont believe)
