I'm currently running the beta but I've never had any Face Unlock issues from the start. Even Motion Sense works well for me too after a slight learning curve in the beginning.

The list of apps that do not support it is still very big, the ones I am interested in are all updated regularly but still no face id so clearly it is not on their roadmap. My banking app works just fine with insecure 2D in screen FPS but no Face ID which is odd as really the only in screen sensors that should are the Samsung ones.
6 months and several 2020 flagship releases later it is still only the Pixel's that use the new API on android so it is probably not a priority. Unless I have missed something it is only the Huawei Mate 20 pro and P40 Pro that have the tech to support secure face ID but for different reasons neither do.
Edit: Just checked the playstore reviews for my bank (First Direct in the UK) lots of comments asking for face id support and a response from the developer dated march saying 'We don't have any plans to include face recognition for Android devices right now' Looks like it will not happen anytime soon for my bank then!
