AR message when placing first sticker

I get an unfamiliar area message whenever I place the first sticker and it says I should move closer to the sticker or place my sticker closer.
Doesn't actually seem to affect anything and nothing I do eliminates the message. Just wondering if anybody else experiences the same thing and what it does actually mean.

This happened to me because I had Camera HAL HDR+ turned on in Developer Options. Once I turned that off, it worked fine.

EDIT: Sorry, I now see that this is a separate issue. Even though my Camera HAL HDR+ is turned off, I also get this message -- but for me, it disappears pretty quickly, like as soon as I move the phone. Experimented a bit more, and it seems like if I turn on AR stickers and let the camera look at the area I'm shooting for a few seconds (maybe moving it around a bit so that it sees it from a few different angles), I don't get the message. I also see a grid of dots overlaid briefly on the surface, which I assume means that the camera has mapped out the surface, and therefore the area has become "familiar" to the camera.

I don't think you can turn of HAL anymore after one of the updates. Thanks for the explanation

No, weird. I just used them in a new place last week and I didn't get any message. I've never seen that message at all.

Do you remember how long you waited before placing the first sticker? If you waited for a few seconds, the camera probably had enough time to map out the area, so it became "familiar."

I definitely did wait 5-10 seconds before placing a sticker. I was bored at work and tried to line up a good shot.

It doesn't matter how long I wait. It also doesn't seem to prevent me from using the sticker so I don't know that really matters
