Are early upgrades still possible on Verizon?

Personally I've never wanted to pay for someone's used phone on ebay so I haven't considered selling mine there. If I'm spending my $, I like to get a new phone. Now, I can get one every year on edge. And ya I like to lease cars too lol.

I don't get the people who "don't have the time" to sell a phone. I've sold a couple on eBay fairly recently, took all of 10 minutes to list them.

Personally I have had bad luck selling used. I have heard of some horror stories too. They are in the minority for sure but I would rather not have to worry about dealing with potential issues.

I replaced a lost Eris through this very site (the marketplace). It was already rooted and everything. I'm glad to have the option of buying used. It can also help people who can't afford to be first adopters get in on the back side of the upgrade curve for little cost. I think I bought one of my Moto DROIDs that way.

It's a win/win. The seller gets some of his or her money back and the buyer gets a better phone than they could get through official channels. You just have to evaluate the other person at the other end of the transaction and consider the marketplace and the protections that they offer.

For instance, I have a high confidence in buying from the marketplace of a forum like this, even though the protections are virtually non-existant. You can tell a lot from the description and the activity of the forum member selling an item. Most have a vested interest in not scamming.

You guys are missing the point of edge... It's to have the ability to upgrade every year...not to pay full price and keep it the full 24 months... If u want to own the phone and wait 2 years to upgrade then edge is not tge way to go...I always sell my old phones on ebay...but I'd rather have a new phone every year.

No we are not or at least I am not. Everyone can upgrade every year if they are willing to use the subsidy when eligible and then pay full price the next year. And as my calculations showed, you are still better off doing that (i.e., using the subsidy one year and then paying full price the next year) compared to the $10/mo Edge discount as long as you are willing to sell your old phone. Go review my calculations in my previous post if you don't believe me.

It is only if you get the $20/mo discount that Edge is worth it.

What is the "subsidy"?? I never had any special subsidy on my Verizon account to get a new device once a year? I had to wait a full 2 years. I no longer have multiple lines on my account to use other people's "updates" I don't sell phones, edge works for me right now. You like to sell phones so you don't do edge. .. That's great for you! There is not only one right way to do this. Thankfully we all have a choice!

Go back and read my post again if you don't understand it. The math checks out. You are confused as to what I was saying. You get a subsidy every 2 years and then if every other year you pay full price, as long as you are willing to sell your old phones, you STILL come out ahead of the $10/mo Edge program discount.

Only the $20/mo Edge discount is worth it unless you can't be bothered to sell a used phone. If you are still confused, go back and read my post again. I spelled it all out clearly in that post.

It's the discount you get every 2 years. He didn't say you get it every year.

And let's not forget the epp, which is the only way to keep unlimited data and still upgrade once a year (or sooner if you like). It's going to cost, but not like paying data charges or paying $40 a month for duplicate Internet charges (if you use your device to watch more than 4 movies a month in hi-def.) Each hour uses a little more than 2 gb. A season of House of Cards will rack up about 20 gb.

you can use your subsidy and keep your UDP. There are thread about this.

Calculations or not my friend, edge is worth it if you want to upgrade every year...with or without discounts...when the Note 4 comes out I can upgrade, and not have to transfer my wife's upgrade and leave her without an upgrade...I had the choice to buy with a 2 yr agreement or use edge...the Note 3 was 299.00, plus the 30.00 upgrade fee and all of the other taxes and fees the total came to 374 and change, and when the note 4 comes out (and since my other 2 lines can't upgrade til 2015) I would be stuck with an outdated phone for another year...and trying to sell a 2 year old device...with edge there was no upgrade fee and over 12 months I pay 350.00 (less now since Verizon added the More Everything discounts) and I get a new phone thats all I care about, being able to upgrade every year a new device is released...I may be paying a little more for that option but it is worth it...

Just be very careful with Verizon's note 3 while you're renting it for a year. I don't imagine your plan will work if you damage their property.

this is true and part of the Edge agreement, but I am very, Very careful with all my electronics...I rarely ever drop my phone, I keep them in cases, and screen protectors...I dont toss it around loosely, I don't loan my phone to people...I am very OCD with my phones...and when I do sell my phones they were in like new condition...so that was another reason edge was good for me.

Boy, seems pretty convoluted from what I've read. Cutting Sim cards? Why am I not surprised that loopholes are being closed as we speak?

Although I wonder why we're even talking about iPhones and Moto in the first place.

I'm fine with going through "official channels" to keep unlimited. Time in researching things that might or might not work at the time of purchase is an expense as well. I'm not saying that I wouldn't try it if there was a workaround at the time that I wanted to upgrade. But I did it in January, you can still do it today without jumping through hoops and you still don't lose much in the bargain.

When (and they probably will sometime in the future) eliminate unlimited data (but maybe not as there are a shrinking number of us still holding on), I'll consider my options.

I'm glad that there are still some grey market, fall through the cracks things available, but epp is official and pretty easy to do. I'm not sure that you save that much money in the long run doing that method. Who knows if this avenue will be shut tight by then?

In the meantime, no worries from my end. In 9 months (or sooner), the phone is mine, not Verizon's. Yeah, I've paid full retail. But yeah, I have a known value as well. I don't use phones as a profit center, I just use phones. I can sell or not depending on the value that I can get. And it looks like I can get good value when the time comes.

First of all, using the r word is pretty offensive. Second of all, I was referring to the PROCESS as convoluted. Don't involve Verizon, don't sign for the phone if things go sideways, ditch the original SIM card, buy another phone, sell it and take the profit if necessary, etc.

Me? I'm getting unlimited data for the same price that everyone else that has Edge or family plans (absent what ever volume discounts they might get) are paying. That's not nothing.

Don't get me wrong - gaming the system doesn't bother me. I'm glad that I was wrong that there's no other way to keep unlimited. But I can at least not worry about whether BB is going to contact Verizon or whether I Goodfella'ed my SIM card just the right way.

Here is the "convoluted" process outlined for you if you are having difficulty grasping it:

1) Order a new phone from Best Buy online using your subsidized upgrade;
2) Don't select a new plan; and
3) Use your old SIM card to activate your new phone when you receive it - if the SIM cards in your old phone and your new phone are different sizes, pull a pair of scissors out of your kitchen drawer and cut your old SIM card down.

Yeah, I can see why it is so confusing, lol!
