I struggling to find anyone who is still enjoying their 1st generation Nexus 7 as much as they did when they 1st got it. My friends and I use to marvel at its speed. Now it does just about everything slow if it doesnt crash. It has improved a little after dumping the FB app and a little tweaking here and there , but Im still not satisfied and I am casting my eye around to see what else is available.
Is there anyone who is still happy with theirs? Can someone give me some encouragement before I dump my 3G 32gb Nexus 7 in the classifieds? :'(

Buy a new device I had one and loved it but its kind of a dinosaur in terms of what's out today.

Moto X 2014

I only want it for web browsing ,emails and simple things. If it cant do that ,then Ill look at something newer.

I got the 5.1 update for my N7 3G at the end of last week and I have to say I'm very happy with its speed now. When 5.0.2 came my N7 was really slow at first. I eventually did a factory reset, which gave me a significant improvement, but with 5.1 I've not felt any need to do this (though I did wipe the cache partition). When I was using 5.0.2 I also did many of the things recommended here:

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/EWUtW5-fVrE[1-25]
(Tuning the Nexus 7 with Android 5 Lollipop)

Some of the recommendations probably don't make much difference and some might stop features you like, so just choose whatever seems sensible.

It's interesting how people's experiences differ so much. It would be nice to pin down how much variation is due to hardware differences (e.g. I've read that some N7s have better memory hardware than others) and how much is due to problems with specific apps (e.g. Facebook seems to be problematic).

Hi .I disabled chrome and stated using opera yesterday and there is a big improvement. Much faster and it is scrolling very smoothly

I still use mine :)
It's my day starter ( I check threads, post some & scan ebay). At about 5 pm the battery is around 30% so that's when I switch to the N9 for the rest of the evening/night.
Works out pretty well.
Still a fast little tablet & the perfect size for me. The N9 is great, but a bit harder to handle as well - I always feel as if its about to slip out of my hand.

Experiences vary indeed! my N7 3g/4g LTE lags terribly with WiFi on after 5.1 update. Works well only when WiFi is off. so annoying! feel like smashing the device but still think it's the best mini tab to have. Hope this lag problem plus the random reboots gets fixed soon! any ideas are welcome :-)

I'd try a cache clear in recovery first. Simple & can't hurt :)
From the looks of it, we shall receive 5.1.1 in the near future ;)

Both 2012 and 2013 versions are excellent. Unfortunately, Google has decided to end the line. There's at least one more OS upgrade for them, but not sure what will happen after that. No matter what, I'll probably keep my 2013 until it falls apart.

I was using mine until I updated it to Lollipop. Once I upgraded it, it moved slower than a dead snail and I haven't even bothered to use it since.

I bought it three years ago and it had better days two years ago.

I actually have used my 2012 Nexus 7 till it fell apart :)
I purchased another with a broken screen off of eBay for the internal parts (mobo & micro USB).
After putting this Frankenstein Nexus 7 back together it's been running quite well and I hope it does for a long time to come :)
5.1 has not given me any real complaints, its going to be interesting to see how 5.1.1 does (I'm an optimistic person so I figure it'll be even better).

I upgraded my 2012 N7 to 5.1 from 4.4. (2 steps OTA).

I didn't install Facebook.

The thing is running surprising well. I've given it to my son and he's using it with no issues.

I was honestly surprised how well it's working.

I would love to go back to 4.4. However I have looked at a few posts about how to downgrade and I still can't figure it out.

I wish there were some easy and clear directions to follow. What I have read so far is not clear to me.

Mine died in Feb. with 5.0.2 hard. Still no response.
My LG G pad 8.3 LTE VZW refurb (50$) is subbing just fine
I hope I can get the old N7 working again
The wife has taken to Kindle big time!

I charged up the battery and immediately upgraded my T-Mobile Nexus 7 to 5.1. Seems to be running much better than it did with the previous Lollipop update. It seems usable now.

Well..... 5.1.1 is out for download... No OTA yet....

As my tab runs well on the 5.1 (WiFi model), it's still not 100%... It does have some slowdown here and there....

So, looking forward to 5.1.1. It certainly can't be as bad as 5.0 or 5.0.2

I haven't used my Nexus 7 in quite awhile, but I keep it around because I have a video game database software that tracks my collection on it. I turned it on for the first time in months and updated it to 5.1 and MAN is this thing performing bad. Chrome is absolutely sluggish and pressing the home button takes about 2 minutes before it finally goes to the main home screen. I should just ditch it and buy a new tablet.

I just got 5.1.1 OTA to my Nexus 7 2012 (apps updating right now). We'll see if it's any less a dog... I may have to flash KitKat back onto it. It used to be quite usable.

I have updated to 5.1.1 and it works quite well. Just stay away from Chrome, it will still freeze. I use Firefox and works very well.
