Are our 2012 nexus 7s doomed?

I would love to go back to 4.4. However I have looked at a few posts about how to downgrade and I still can't figure it out.

I wish there were some easy and clear directions to follow. What I have read so far is not clear to me.

DoubleTap,
Did you ever figure out how to remove lolly?

Wugs root toolkit will allow you to flash 4.4.4
There are other ways but wugs is pretty darn easy for ppl new to flashing ;)
Check out the various vids on YouTube....

I have updated to 5.1.1 and it works quite well. Just stay away from Chrome, it will still freeze. I use Firefox and works very well.
Good to know. I agree that it's vastly improved but I still get locks due to chrome...

Is the update to 5.0.2 required before updating to 5.1.1 OTA?

Probably so as the N9 had to take 5.0.2 a day or so before 5.1.1's OTA was released.
I realize we're talking about the n7 here but I guess it would make sense that it would also have to take the gradual steps to update to 5.1.1 also.

I still have mine and use it only for playing clash of clans. I just like the screen size better for that than my nexus 10. But recently I can only charge it while powered off. I'll keep it for a few months longer but looking around to replace it. Pretty sure I'll either get the dell 8 inch or a nexus 9.

I decided to stay with 5.1.1 I can live with it although I would prefer to go back.

Updated to 5.1.1 via OTA recently (lazy to flash factory image this time) and at first it was bad with slow app switching, etc.

So I decided to factory data reset the n7 and everything is as good as new; actually better with 5.1.1 improvements.

After considerable frustration, I decided to bite the bullet and find an easy way to root and roll back to KitKat 4.4.4. I found the windows program Nexus Root Toolkit, and dove in. The whole process was easy, and pretty much automated. After all was said and done, my 32gb nexus thought it was 8gb, so I did one more factory clear and reset. Partition got rebuilt with 32gb, and I just reinstalled apps from scratch, and now I love my Nexus 7 2012 again!

A BIG GIANT Thank You for turning me on to Nexus Root Toolkit.
I just rolled back to KitKat 4.4.4.
If a relatively unsophisticated person (me) can use this to get through the process with zero problems anyone can do it.

I hope to post again in a few days to let you all know if this rollback allows the tablet to run much better or not.

I flashed using my PC and my experiences are similar to these. My N7 works pretty well again.

Now that I rolled back to 4.4.4 it's as if I got a 800 pound gorilla off the tablet. It now runs great.

I have to say that with the first, 5.0.2 Android, things got slower, but once I put 5.1 on it, my 2012 is a lot more responsive. Do you have 5.1?

I struggling to find anyone who is still enjoying their 1st generation Nexus 7 as much as they did when they 1st got it. My friends and I use to marvel at its speed. Now it does just about everything slow if it doesnt crash. It has improved a little after dumping the FB app and a little tweaking here and there , but Im still not satisfied and I am casting my eye around to see what else is available.
Is there anyone who is still happy with theirs? Can someone give me some encouragement before I dump my 3G 32gb Nexus 7 in the classifieds? :'(

My 2012 N7, 32 GB, Wi-Fi only, had slowed to a snail's pace but after doing the Cache Partition Wipe (see sticky/instructions at top of Nexus 7 2012 threads) everything is working much faster! Previously I could hardly use Words With Friends and other apps because they had become soooo slow. Then last night, whenever I tried to access my photos I kept getting a "Google Photo" sign-up screen which I couldn't get rid of, also lost access to my photos, and also lost my home screen's Google icon. All of that is fixed now after doing the CP Wipe. It's great to have my N7 1st gen. running like it was new again.

Jim
P.S. I'm currently using it with the 5.1.1 Lollipop version, so those who have complaints with the new Lollipop upgrade should definitely try this CP Wipe.

Glad you found a CP wipe a big help, however not only did it not do anything for me, I also did a factory reset. That was some help. The thing that worked great for me was to roll back to 4.4.4 it now runs as if brand new.

Same! I got tired of having an UNSABLE device (that's how bad the lag is with Lollipop) that I bit the bullet and downgraded to Kitkat 4.4.4. Like any tinkering I do with my devices it was a headache, but like any tinkering I do with my devices, I was able to get it done. So glad I did. Tablet does indeed run likes brand new. (Now, it's still the 2012 Nexus 7, so it ain't gonna run like butter lol)

OH BTW, before I did this I indeed wiped the cache partition, but the tablet slowed again after about 2 days.
