Are phones getting too big?

I don't think of an Apple phablet replacing any of their current offerings. That'd be a bad and stupid move, IMO. It would need to be in addition to their current offerings, which is why I disagree with you.

Well, while I'm not totally opposed to that, I'd still hesitate against it for the reasons that there is ACTUALLY a sweet spot in size that can make most people happy. And when u make changes in design like they did this time with the 5c, u risk losing partners over design complications for cases, docks, etc. but also, I think it will affect apps too.

But in my view, I totally get why 4" is too small. But my argument is that 5 isn't the answer. And if u look at the total consumer market, I think you'll see that there is pretty clear evidence that smaller is still "in!" Not tiny! Just smaller!

As for phablet phones, I consider anything 5in plus a phablet regardless of the bezel. And I never said that they should go away. I simply said that it should be a nitch product and that android OEMs should focus on it's primary unit, and then extend it to it's nitch areas if it chooses. But what I see is that everything is big on the android side. And the rush seems to be who can make it bigger! And to me, that's the wrong approach completely! Then every now and then when they make a mini that doesn't sell well, they say the consumers don't want it, yet, I personally think it doesn't sell well because the OEM is making THESE phones the nitch products and not the phabs. And if u notice, every mini is dubbed, the affordable alternative or the phone for emerging markets!

So clearly, these companies are missing something! And on their own, every company except Samsung is doing badly. There's got to be a reason behind that!

Samsung may be known as the phablet maker and have already established themselves as such. But others are not as successful with their phablet crazes. And in fact, they aren't successful on their own period. It leaves it open for debate as to what consumers really want.

*sigh* I'm getting dragged into this crap again.

There's a lot more to Apple's success than the size of their device. Trying to attribute it mostly to size is being completely disrespectful to the quality of their ecosystem, hardware quality, marketing, and services.

That is already understood. It's an entire package, not just screen size. Bit if Apple is keeping with 4", that means they see the market not taking to well to phabs and don't want to just chase it's tail like Samsung does. And I respect that!

Bit regardless of the entire package that makes Apple successful an ecosystem, it doesn't mean that size is not one of those factors. And it also doesn't give the green light to customers wanting phabs across the board.

Basically, there's a lot of factors involved here. And at the end of the day, I tend to see one universal conclusion to all this. For mainstream, 4in is too small and 5in is too big... That's not a radical thought if you're not so black n white about things.

It makes the incentive to switch much more difficult if you are deeply rooted into a platform. If size is that important then go for it. I gave up well over $1000 in things I couldn't bring with me to Android. That lost money means more to me than the size of my Note or One but the freedom of Android trumped that.

That doesn't apply just to phones either. If I left Xbox for the PlayStation 4, I lose all my achievements, score, friends, and other exclusives. The extra power just isn't worth it.

Moto pulled it off well and hope they have the other wood backs soon.

Def agree with that! And I own both! I use my Moto X on wifi for digital content, chromecast, etc and my iphone for my primary. Can't beat an iphone 5s with a lifeproof Nuud waterproof case in my view.

But deep down, my Moto X is the dream device I always wanted, both estedically and software feature wise.

Android overall is better as an OS when don't clean and right

If you think an iPhone has good build quality, wait until you see my HTC Amaze, only a simple $5 case and it has survived 6 foot drops on its face with no damage. Only a small little nick on the top right that can be fixed with a replacement case from Amazon. It seems like I just can't kill any of my phones. My Samsung Wave was a beast and my Blackberry 8120 was a brick. Y U NO DIE PHONE!!!!

I like change a lot which is the absolute only reason I'd consider iOS nowadays. I also have a decent investment in their app ecosystem. There, however, is not one single thing about the devices, app ecosystem, or Android itself that makes me want to leave Android. It took a while for me to feel that way but I thoroughly do. For me Android is black...complete. I experience no bugs that are memorable enough to recall.

With the iPad Mini LTE there really is no need for Apple to make a phablet and I recognize that is probably their thinking. A phablet would simply be nice for those that want the in-between device.

That's why they should offer two sizes of the iPhone, instead of the flagship and a "cheap" iPhone like they did this year

I agree! A phablet for apple will take away iPad mini sales and blur the 2 way too much. I think Apple can please the masses (including myself) by adding a 4.5 to 4.7 inch screen on its iphone 6.

The Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 don't seem to have a problem, neither does the Note 3 and Note 8. But then again Apple users aren't exactly the brightest people around.

IPhone, regardless of the politics had always been top spec world, class design and build quality, with a zoo of aftermarket accessories and apps to go with it. The ecosystem both hardware accessories and software is top notch for a reason. No other OEM can do this on its own.

So what I'm saying is that whether its Samsung, HTC, LG, or Motorola, one of them have to back one design scheme and one perfect size, then invest heavily in the decision made. Only then can an OEM single handedly take on Apple.

In other words, I don't believe 5in is the sweet spot.

Iphones NEVER had top specs in hard or software when they just recently got LTE on the 5 smgdh. My old s2 had 4g and a couple other stuff the ip5s don't have smh. Just stop bro please stop.

Apple has always had best in class design, very well rounded specs (if not the absolute best) with no gimmicks, and buttery smooth UI in a tight and simple package with a huge ecosystem, lots of backing by Apple and third party accessories and developers, etc. The whole package is what counts, but overall, they got away with a 3.5in screen for so long and only since last year, a 4in screen. And no other single OEM can compete head to head with that. And knowing all that to be fact, you still want to to play particine and criticize it and think size doesn't matter to a very large part of the market just because of the energy on an Android forum that does not even come close to reflecting what the entire market really wants.

Listen to the podcasts, listen to the blogs, the writers, look at the ppl, look at ur phone and ask urself what's commonly practical to general ppl. Do people want a mobile movie device first or do ppl generally want a "phone" first. Communications, believe it or not, is still #1 for most people before Netflix and Hulu.

To not recognize that is to not be a good analysis of technology

I started this thread to say that phones are getting way too big these days. I want to upgrade, but phones are just huge. And finding a good top of the line specced device is nearly impossible. I hope people are on the same page as me. I love how Apple has the nice specced phone that is reasonably sized. Not everybody wants a big phone

Is there anyone out there that agrees???

I think there is a nice variety. If you want a large one, they have them. If you want a smaller one, they have them too. I like the variety. I had an S4 but went to the Moto X for a few reasons. One of them was size. But I recognize the fact that not one size fits all.

I agree with you. But there are no cream of the crop phones in a small size. Although, I'd say that "for me," the Moto X is cream of the crop Enough for me. But outside of that, it's a ghost town of small flagships within android.

Yea, the Moto X is cream of the crop. The display is sexy, the specs are awesome. There is nothing low end about this phone. I think that Google and Motorola are working on fixing that. Google is getting ready to rock the cell world via Moto.
