Are screen-off apps with Nova gestures still relevant?

I remember this being the solution to using knock-on/off with Nova on my G4. Can this still be used with the G6? Or is the way Android handles this different now?

Nova still does it. And allows you to use fingerprint as far as I know.

I use screen lock pro because the Nova developer recommended it when I emailed them about it before it was supported. Now since I bought it I still use it because I like the animations.
