Are there any downsides to rooting?

This is a dumb question but what is the monolith build?

More or less the "milestone build" of crossbreed.Pretty much tested and proven stable. It got updated last night also

But the Nightly Sho (Patient Zero) Builds They Have Exp.
Tweaks, Apps, Mods, Etc. They are stable yet there may be bugs. They are more or less a nightly build as the name suggest.
Posted in the quote below is a direct quote from DT (added)>But also I read Patient zero is gunno turn into something else so everything in Patient zero isnt going to be in the monolith build

NIGHTLY SHO (PATIENT ZERO) BUILDS

READ THIS... THESE BUILDS ARE FOR CRACKFLASHERS, THE HAVE EXPERIMENTAL TWEAKS, APPS, MODS, ETC. THEY ARE STABLE, YET THERE MAY BE BUGS... WHICH IS THE POINT OF THIS. IF YOU LIKE TO FLASH AND PLAY WITH COOL , YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT SECTION. IF YOU WANNA BE A CRACKFLASHER, WE WIPE ALWAYS, AND WE DON'T RESTORE OLD DATA. ROCK OUT!!

rooted it with the one click program. was easy. I like the no ads

Is there a rom that allows you to change the default camera?

I am getting a replacement phone from verizon, will titanium backup work to transfer it over?

edit: getting a replacement because the lock button is getting stuck. probably should have said that before I rooted

Move your titanium backup folder from your old phone's sd card to the new one and your apps will be all good with a TBU restore.

Just make a nandroid/backup in CWM recovery, do your full wipe--data/cache/dalvik/format system--and flash it.

I'm in the same boat as OP and from what I've found, certain apps will not work on a rooted phone. I believe you also have to be careful with Google Wallet if you intend to root.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this. I want to get a real assessment of rooting and it's hard to take anyone seriously with the rampant fanboyism. It's like no one really wants to talk about the downsides with rooting or custom ROMs. EVERYTHINGS GREAT.

If you follow instructions and do it correctly, everything IS great. It's sad that it has such an unjust stigma attached.

I guess it's not for everyone. It certainly is for ME

Not much is said about wallet because it just works on rooted gnexs. I been rooted since day one and aside from a couple glitches its been working.

It has a banner up top saying "unsupported device" but it works fine.

May seem like fanboyism but custom roms greatly enhance the experience vs stock is why us root ppl rave so much.

Wallet works fine for me. I'm on AOKP b30 with Franco's nightly r133. No issues. I even had $100 on my Google prepaid card before I gave in and unlocked/rooted/flashed. Opened wallet, added the prepaid card back, and all the loot was right there. As dmmarck would say, "Profit".

Use it every day for lunch money. Works great.

Downsides?

The only real one that I see is you. And I don't mean you specifically but the user in general.

Ask yourself this question... how will I react if I flash something and the wheels come off? Some pretty serious issue that renders the device inoperable? At least temporarily...

Flash enough stuff and you may well break something someday. When you do, are you the kind of user that would then start a logical process of searching for and reading about ways to remedy the issue? No downside for this person.

OR will you be in panic mode and be unable to calmly work through the issue? I've seen a few people really upset to the point of not being able to help themselves at all. If breaking the device is really a huge issue for you... Huge Downside! Don't root!

There are volumes of online information on the subject to help you learn. Not to mention a lot of brilliant people that would be glad to help you if asked. So in my feeble mind... it all comes back to you and what you're comfortable with!

As for me... well I'm stalking DT at the Hive waiting for the "Get It" on his new Axi0m ROM that should be ready sometime today! :D

Absolutely agree with you 100%. I think half of flashing is knowing how to escape; so understanding what a kernel is, what a radio/baseband is, how to use fastboot/adb, how to get in and out of recovery without an app like Rom Manager--all are vital. The more you know, and honestly, the more you experience, the better you get.

For example, I've bootlooped my DINC twice. One of those times I have no idea WTF happened. The other was me being stupid/drunk and flashing a TBolt rom (b/c I was drunk, don't ask, it's in the Chatter thread lol). But you know what? Knowing how to react and get out of that taught me so much about flashing. I went from relying on Rom Manager and stuff like that (although the TBolt one was obviously not dled through that lol) to doing everything manually.

I've also had the misfortune of having 4 of these devices. Each time I unlocked/rooted using my Mac's Terminal. Why? Well, I could have used my fiancee's laptop to One-Click it. But really, what's that do that I can't? It just makes it simpler, but for those who have no idea what they're doing, if THAT screws up then you're really screwed.

So in essence, take your time, do some research, and have an exit strategy.

Some of you guys have a really negative stance on rooting. I can totally respect your opinion if you actually rooted and tried a custom rom, and decided it's not for you. How can you form an opinion one way or the other without trying both sides?
Just yesterday a guy in this forum flashed a rom for the first time and wondered why he didn't do it sooner in the "what's your daily driver" thread.
As they say don't knock it till you've tried it.

You took the words right out of my mouth, it must have been while you were ...

Wait, wrong thread? ;)

I 100% agree, obviously. Especially for this phone...

There's already a lot of good advice given. I will just simply say I have found no disadvantages to rooting. Also, and this my experience, but I've never hard bricked my phone. I've always been able to undo any damage or mishaps I've accidentally created. With an unlocked bootloader its virtually impossible to hard brick these phones. As long as you read and become informed, you're pretty safe. There are about 10 apps I use that I could not use if i wasn't rooted and I love these apps. There's nothing like total freedom and being in control of your own device. Rooting plus Android gives you that. Its also become a hobby of mine as others have noted. Its really fun!

We are here to help. Do some reading and then come back for suggestions, clarification, and tips. Enjoy! :)
