oh wow. yeah that's not normal.. especially if you're actively using the screen and it goes blank. weird
I found out what caused the issue! If you're on bluetooth, the phone is still using the light sensor to turn off the screen (which is the way it knows to turn the screen off when you're on the phone and hold it against your ear).
While you are using a bluetooth headset during a phone call, wave a finger over (without touching the phone) over the light sensor. The screen will turn off. The location is such that if you accidentally cover the light sensor and then you start reaching for the power button to turn the screen back on, you will keep tripping the light sensor to turn off the screen.
At least the phone is smart enough to turn off the light sensor when you are on speakerphone. I'm not quite sure how to easily switch back and forth from bluetooth and speakerphone during a phone call though.
