With all the recent hacks I am surprised that someone hasn't hacked into VZW or Moto and released some actual information...

I AM NOT saying someone should do this... but think about it, with all the people that would be on the inside, say testers, developers, VZW people, suppliers, manufacturers, it would be pretty easy to compromise and monitor at least one of their emails. I mean, there's low hanging fruit in every organization.

Who said anything about jail time. It would take an afternoon or so for some of them to do it. Not to mention, not all the recent hacks, both the ones you hear about and the ones you don't, are all about the publicity. Some are just for fun or on a dare. I'm just surprised one hasn't gotten frustrated and tried.

I don't think its worth the risk to try and hack them and risk going to jail or paying massive fines. Besides for that, some people have jobs and/or school What you need is a hacker who sits on his or her *** all day and doesn't mind potential repercussions

If anything, the upgrade will happen after xoom 1.5 goes on sale. Not cool....

I agree with you. From what I know, they are mostly middle aged programmers, networking technicians, and IT specialists who do their "extra curricular activities on the side." However, if a person just works, they have the luxury of coming home after the workday and going about whatever it is that they do. Some people work multiple jobs while they are in school, and at the same time try to follow their hobbies. Which may or may not include (legally) searching around Verizon and Motorola's websites and resources looking for hints of a certain phone even though they have 3 papers due that week

Not bad... 19 years old, but what was his role. I don't doubt his capabilities, but if he was instrumental, it's a shame he has been taken in. He would have had invaluable skills that could have been used to benefit others. I'm not saying saying hacking is a good thing but if anonymous and lulzsec is true to their words and use their skills to unveil the truth while keeping the innocent out of it, I can't hate. Yep... My brother and I both were hit. The only thing we share in common was our PSN accounts.

Oddly enough they printed cards and used them within an hour of each other in 2 different states. My bank picked up on the activity but his did not. He's in Afghanistan and his wife was in TX at the time and their bank account (in NY) was cleaned out so they both had no money and no access to the bank. Kinda crappy but all was settled.

Oh yeah... leaking millions of credit card numbers and passwords with the instructions to cause as much havoc with them as possible? That definitely sounds like trying to keep the innocent out of it.

Oh and on a sidenote, Lulzsec did hack ATT and release some of their "secret" documents on their LTE strategy.

Actually the hacking of Sony has a bit more of a backstory to it. Sony at some point had gone after a hacker named George Hotz who was doing some fairly benign hacking of the PS3. They used the one of the worst written laws around, DMCA, to go after him.

This Clinton era law essentially makes it illegal to reverse engineer things that are "encrypted". This poorly written law in turn has been exploited by companies to prosecute hackers and other companies trying to make devices that requires reverse engineering. It essentially lets them lock out competition. Incidentally it's also exactly the kind of thing that Moto could use, if they desire, to go after people who write utilities to root their phones.

Anyway, I think it was mostly due to that action that brought the wrath of the hacker community against Sony. They in turn went after Sony and managed to get in and really do some damage. This definitely embarrassed Sony, their Playstation Network was out of commission, and people are now perhaps a little less trusting of Sony with CC numbers and so on.

I am not saying that taking out Sony like this was the right thing to do. Two wrongs don't make a right.

LulzSec definitely got some attention, but that's the thing about hackers. They got arrogant and themselves got hacked by a different hacker group. Not to mention they got a lot of attention - that community doesn't really seem to like attention like LulzSec drew.

Of course there are other kinds of hackers outside of the groups I mentioned - the kind who work for China government and the Russian mob are a different thing alltogether.
