Ask me about T-Mobile's new 'Simple Choice' rate plans!

If its such a simple choice why can't I just get data

TMO GS3 * NEXUS 7

Because this is a phone company. However, you can add a tablet with a GMS radio to an existing account. I do not know of any carrier that will let you open an account for just a tablet.

Pretty much any carrier that sells data-only service plans will let you open an account for just a tablet.

2G is EDGE. 1G is GSM. They only boot you down to 2G

That begs the question. Their network is 95% EDGE so if you're already on EDGE like most of their customers and exceed your data allocation they have to boot you down to something even slower, like 1G.

I would think if you do manage to hit your limit on EDGE (maybe with the 500 MB plan) they'd set your data to 2G and you'd never know it happened. Has anyone had this happen yet?

What on earth are you talking about? Almost all of T mobiles customers have access to high speed data.

For the record 220+ million people are covered by T-Mobile's HSPA+ 4G network. But to answer your question if you only have access to EDGE service due to your location or your handset then when you go over you data allotment, if you aren't on the unlimited package, then you won't even know because there is nowhere to be throttled too

Jon, I understand that you're an AT&T customer/fan/(employee?) and very pleased with the service that you have in your area. Please keep in mind that one provider may work better in a certain area than another. Many of us viewing the T-Mobile forums have enjoyed reliable and speedy performance from T-Mobile but we can understand that it isn't like that in ALL markets as the coverage map illustrates.

However, spreading blatant falsehoods about the T-Mobile network is not constructive and, in fact, misleading for people that are here looking for useful information from these forums (no matter how hyperbolic your claims may be, some may not recognize them as such). In the interest of maintaining a higher level of discourse, I'd recommend that you check your facts and consider that what you're adding to the conversation is in direct opposition to that objective. Normally I wouldn't even respond to a post of this nature, but I want to make sure that people who are here looking for honest advice aren't misled by inaccurate claims stated as fact now or going forward.

No, AT&T LTE operates on band 17 while T-Mobile LTE operates on band 4. The AT&T Samsung Galaxy SIII (model SGH-I747) only has the LTE 700 MHz Class 17 / 2100 LTE radio in it.

In fact, you wouldn't even get HSPA+ with that phone unless you're one of the few in a refarmed area. You would most likely be stuck on 2G speeds with that phone because it isn't compatible with T-Mobile's 3G and 4G frequencies.

Okay then are there any truly world phones out there that would work on both LTE networks

There are some, such as the Sony Xperia ZL, that work with both carrier's LTE networks. When looking for phones with specific frequency bands I always recommend using the Phone Finder tool at GSMArena.com.

I was under the impression that the vast majority of AT&T LTE phones worked on band 17 and 4.

Perhaps in La La land or in T-Mobile fanboy dreams. I travel the country and was on EDGE almost all of the time. Their 4G was found only in the largest cities and even then there were substantial pockets of EDGE in those cities. There is no way they are covering 220 million people; there are only 300 million in the country and that would mean they're covering 73% of the population, which is not true. But this is the same company who had to stop advertising they had the nation's largest 4G network and who recently had a cease and desist settlement regarding their misleading so called non contract plans. If you check with the BBB not only do you find they have an F rating, but the vast majority of complaints filed against the company come from their misrepresentation of a number of things, the biggest of which is coverage and their mythical 4G network.

That impression is correct.

However it is also important to pay attention to 3G bands. T-Mobile's HSPA+ is a great alternative to have when LTE isn't available. That is why it is important to find phones with HSDPA 1700/2100 in addition to LTE 1700/2100. All AT&T phones have HSDPA 850/1900 for their HSPA+ and nearly all of them don't have HSDPA 1700/2100 built in.

Uhm you do understand that T-Mobile would have to actually tell the truth in advertising, right? If they're advertising 220 million people covered by high speed, then that is what is covered by high speed.

Not to mention sounds like you have a pretty big Axe to grind against them, so we shouldn't listen to you anyways...
