Ask Phil about the EVO 3D

If a cell phone takes a good picture that's just great!! BUT to expect it to outperform a point and shoot camera people are crazy, have people seen the size of the lens on a point and shoot or a Dslr?? Megapixels are far from important, its all in the glass and the sensor and the software. Last time I looked I haven't seen a cell phone camera with Canon L lenses or a cmos sensor. So if your cell phone camera takes a decent picture its an added bonus nothing more nothing less. I'm sure it wont be too much longer before we see cell phones with Nikon or Canon lenses just give 6-9 months.

I have a Nikon 6 megapixel camera that I bought a few years ago. There are several phones that take better pictures. The iPhone camera is at least as good, probably better, several Nokia's are way better, several Sony Ericssons are better, several Samsungs are better. Heck, my Evo 4g is not far away from it.

Guys, don't get confused by what I said and turn this into a whole thread hijack debating it...

I am not saying that a top end cell phone should be better than all the latest and greatest cameras on the market right now. I am saying it should be at least as good and probably even better than the average point and shoot cameras on the market when you bought your last phone. And when I say when you bought your last phone, I really mean about 2 years ago, since the phone is supposed to last you 2 years (at least the contract is 2 years).

So is the Evo 3D camera better than the average point and shoot from 2 years ago? It is not at all unreasonable to expect it to be. You can bet the Galaxy S 2's camera will be, and the next iPhone's will be as well.

Do u want it to fly u in space. I mean what else would u possibly want? Bigger battery? Done. Double the processing speed? Done. Double the memory? Done. Better Res? Done. New version of sense? Done. Gingerbread? Done. No lag? Done. What else would soomeone want is out of my capacity to think. If u want a phone to use as your camera then you really don't want a phone. 720p recording is still good for any phone. The wirefly video was pretty damn good for a phone.

1. work as *gasp* a phone
2. hold a signal
3. take decent photos and videos (2D) at least as well as the 4G

Sorry for your mental block!

Sprint has an excellent return policy if you don't like the phone. Purchase it, put it through it's paces for a month and return it if it doesn't stand up to expectations. Reviews on the net are subjective. Albeit good, user experience will very depending on what is expected.

Totally agree. I think its funny that people seem to want to make their buying decision solely based on reviews. If that is the case you need to run and go buy the Kyocera echo because it got an 8/10 on engadget!! This phone is basically the Evo 4G upgraded in almost every way possible w/3D so unless you had serious problems with the EvO 4G (which is still a great phone if I may add), most people will have no problems with the Evo 3D.

Phone Arena's new review is up, it doesn't have a lot of good things to say about the camera. http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/HTC-EVO-3D-Review_id2768

i think people just enjoy the speculation up till the phone comes. we want some validation of decisions, and when reviews become inconsistent, it sends people all over =)

and i personally always hate dealing with returns, even if a company has a good return policy (there's still that restocking fee).

as of now, my biggest complaint is I can't use my premiere status at wirefly to have them ship me the phone tomorrow =)

So you have no actual experience with what you are arguing about. Going from 3gs iphone resolution to the iphone 4 resolution which is about the same in this case was a HUGE difference the pixel density makes text on the screen look like its a crisp piece of printed paper not a blocky pix elated mess. It makes Icons for apps look so much less cheap looking. Basically as a whole the more PPI there is the more it looks like you are interfacing with something real and believable like it's not a computer screen but a real button instead of something that looks like the original zelda title for the NES.
There are three things that you want to minimize on a phone when reading text: the amount of scrolling/resizing you have to do to read something, and how much you have to squint to read text. If I go to a webpage and want to read the whole thing, I double-tap on the text and it immediately shifts to an easily legible font size. If my phone had a higher resolution, it would be easier to read smaller text, thus allowing more text in the screen and less scrolling. Normally, I'm discussing iPhone vs. EVO, where I simply say that what the EVO lacks in text size it more than makes up for in screen real-estate. In this case, I'll agree that higher ppi makes for some usability gains, but you all equate slight pixelization with being stabbed in the face repeatedly, and that - for me - is insane. That doesn't mean it's not valid - my wife can't stand if I put silverware upside down in the dishwasher while I don't care - it's just not something I care about.

FYI, a 720p display at 4.3" would be EXACTLY the same ppi as the iPhone.

Phil - I played with one today. Have you had the 3D display stay running while back in sense yet? Ours did that today. In Sense, the 3D layer stayed on and you could see funky stuff happening. Real feint copies of stuff on the screen would be scrolling slowly if you held it at different angle.

Ended up pulling the battery. I probably should have gone to the camera and toggled it, but I had the back off already.

Just curious if you've seen this on yours.

Where are the comparisons between the 3D and Sensation on the important things? Call quality? Data speeds? etc..

Call quality and data speed sound like more of a Sprint coverage vs T-mobile coverage thing. I think that the other video was helpful, the fact that the 3d doesn't lag when using the main part of the phone is pretty big imo.

These things are hard to compare because you have two different carriers so coverage will affect those even if the phones function identically. Besides, you'd also have to compare CDMA to GSM.

Ok, so whats the problem? Sounds like a great comparison to me. I just switched from Sprint to TMobile to get the Sensation and they both have their pros and cons. Would love to hear what those are between these two phones are.

The problem is, let's say Sprint has great coverage where you live and T-Mobile has terrible coverage. The EVO 3D would be likely to give you great call quality and fast internet speeds and the Sensation would be terrible. But let's say it's the opposite where I live, T-Mobile is great and Sprint isn't. I'll have the opposite results. So how can you compare the phones when they run on different networks and those networks can very easily determine your experience?

Exactly, I agree with you completely

Dear John...I mean Phil

What is the story here with your review Phil?

Are you doing space trials with the thing???
Has Larry Flint hired you to film his "clients" with the device???
Have you been abducted during said space trails and if so what do your captors think of the device??

^lol

I guess he wants to give it a very good run before he comments. Or it's because what he has to say after using it for a few days now isn't so good and he knows it will cause upheavill?

I almost dont care anymore. We can just see what people are saying about it when they activate today. I wish we could have gotten his review before people started getting them in the mail.
