Assigning contacts to groups?

I created a contact on my Android phone and want to add it to my 'Friends' group. I can do this from the GMail Contacts interface from my PC but don't see how I would be able to do this from the Android phone...

Is there a way to add a contact to a group from the phone?

I don't think so. I couldn't find it anywhere in the contacts app. It seems that all you can do is make them a favorite (star).

chalk this up to bug number two for the contacts app! (Modifying Birthdays is number one)
