Assistant app no longer works in Bixby routine (or anywhere)

I have a Bixby routine set up where I can long-press the power button and it activates the Google Assistant. This routine was dependent on running that little "Assistant" app. Worked great until a few days ago. Now if I hold down the power button or click on the Assistant app, I get the screen I pasted below. I can still swipe up from the corner and get the assistant.

There is no update to the Google app. There was one recently though (possible culprit). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Google App updates. Reinstalling the Assistant app. Tried clearing data on both apps. Rebooted phone. Nope.

I decided to factory reset. Just kidding. Is anyone experiencing this? Any ideas on how to fix it? Just wait for the next update? Thanks!

I don't use Bixby routines but does this happen without using Bixby routines?

Yes. Anytime you run the Google Assistant app you get that screen telling you to update the Google app. The Bixby routine just runs the app.

UPDATE: I decided to give it another try just now and it didn't work. But, this time, I clicked on PLAY STORE just to see if it had an update there. It didn't but I scrolled down. There are multiple complaints about the latest update breaking various aspects of the Google Assistant. There is one response from Google that they are going to look into it. I guess I should have read reviews before I posted this.

Hopefully, Google will issue an update soon. Meanwhile, swiping up from the corner works when you hit it just right.

I don't see an option to set Google Assistant for press and hold feature of the side key. can you share the screenshot of how you have it setup?

The way it looks OP had it set-up was download Google assistant app from play store then when you go settings>advanced features >side key >app to open double press

They said that they were using a Bixby routine attached to a long press of the side key.

You can do it this way and associate a double-press of the side key to launching the Google Assistant app (which is currently broken). I didn't want to give up the double-press for the camera. I use it a lot, it's habit when I need the camera quickly. Mapping it to the Google Assistant this way works fine though. This way of mapping the key is much easier.

I may check out Bixby Remapper. I'll give Google a couple more days to fix it. Thanks!

I am trying to recall this but I believe you need to install Samsung Good Lock then the plugin called "Routines+" for this to work. You get them in the Galaxy Store. You then go into the standard Samsung Routines app and create a new routine using "Button Action" as the IF part of the routine. It will let you use the side key and volume keys for routines. I picked press and hold the side key. For the THEN part of the action, pick "Open an app" then choose the Google Assistant app (you need to download the Assistant app from the Play store.

Basically, you use Routines+ to add a few more conditions you can use in your routines. Let me know if you need clarification.

Keep in mind - this won't work until Google fixes the Assistant app and/or the Google app.

I always forget that you need good lock and routines+ lol. It's just such a basic thing for me to install them I forget it's a separate feature that not everyone has installed.

Unfortunately, it looks like the third party app I use to do this which still works is no longer in the play store... You could always remap to Google Voice Search... It's not as full-featured but it could be a stopgap.

It's fixed. There was an update to the Google app earlier in the day that did not fix the issue. Then, just now, I got an update to the Google Assistant app. Not sure if both were necessary to fix the problem or just the latter. Bottom line, it's working again so you can use the Google Assistant app in your routines if you'd like.
