You could root to remove or you could disable the apps you do not want and they will not use resources, not show up in your app drawer and you will not be prompted to update them. They will still be on your phone but out of sight and out of mind.

As far as the S4, most of the boat and fluff is Samsung stuff. Carrier stuff is comparably small this time.
