AT&T Gear S with Verizon phone

I know this has been posted before. I have been searching for a while to find anything recent on it. Last I read, someone said messages and calls go through Samsung's servers but they were looking into moving that to the carriers which would make buying a different carriers watch not work well.

I really want to get the watch but I am not paying $399 (or $349 with 2 year contract) at Verizon when AT&T has it for $299 (or $99 with 2 year contract). That is absurd to me. I could see AT&T running an online deal for $50 or even $100 cheaper, not $250.

So to my question, can I still buy the watch at AT&T and have it work with my Verizon phone? I know it would work with BT with my phone but what about if I leave my phone at home?

Second semi-related question, if I do buy it at AT&T with no data plan just to use with BT, would my phone need to be turned on as a hotspot for the watch to use data (for GPS, etc)?

Well, as someone in your situation-lemme say this-ebay is your friend. I got the ATT version for 185 bucks! Granted, I was a ***** and got two little scratches on the bottom part of the screen the first day I had it-screen protector incoming, the lowest you're probably going to get it for barring a lucky bid is low 200s. And I don't know about getting a standalone plan for it, I didnt get much help at the local ATT store, you'd have to talk to them. And btw, the first day I used the watch, I was talking to it all day like Detective Tracy, so, go figure.

If you leave your phone at home and you don't have a separate plan with voice and data, your watch will be useless.

The watch can use BT connection to access internet. No hotspot needed.

So you have an AT&T watch with Verizon phone? Do you just use BT and not worry about not having your phone? I'm thinking that is the direction I'm going to go. I never leave my phone anywhere and I'm usually within BT range. If not, it isn't for long so I don't care.

If you leave your phone at home and you don't have a separate plan with voice and data, your watch will be useless.

Is there an issue with having an AT&T watch with Verizon phone? I should still be able to call and text forward, right?

So far thats what I did. I only used a day though, waiting till I get my screen protector in. Trust me, if I could have found someone selling the Verizon version on ebay for 185-200 I'd have bought that one, but the best price I was able to find till I got this one was about 215 for a ATT version:
Samsung SM R750A Galaxy Gear s Black Curved AMOLED Unlocked at T Any GSM | eBay
So you're not gonna find a better price for any version, unless you get REALLY lucky like I did.

If it starts getting over $200, I might as well go buy it brand new at ATT for $100 more. I don't mind buying used especially since it is so new to market but there is a point where I'd rather spend the extra money for new. $250 used or $299 plus tax new, I think I'd buy new.

It should work. There are already many threads about this.

I was searching them all this week and couldn't find any that were semi recent which is why I asked. I would think you can call/text forward to any number anyway. I still don't know I really need the standalone feature. Sure it is cool and it would be nice for those few times I forget my phone but out of the 365 days in a year, I probably forget it 5 at the most. Not really worth spending $10 or $15 a month for those 5 days.

To make your decision easier, you will need pay at least $30+/mo for service with AT&T on watch alone unless you can get it unlocked and use a T-Mobile plan which is still like $15/mo.

My friend does have AT&T so I could use his contract to get it unlocked and go to TM but even at $15/month, I'm better off not using the standalone feature and just make sure I always have my phone on me. We all know $15/month turns into $25/month with taxes and fees lol

BTW, the ebay one I linked to IS new, as far as I can tell. I think the seller is just a retailer that sells ones that people initially get and then change their mind about having, you could always email them.

Honestly, I can say that if I'm going somewhere and my phone's not going with me, I'm probably literally going about 3 miles away to the grocery store and coming back, and that's about it. If it was a case of say, being able to get some prepaid deal on your carrier that wouldn't expire for a while, then you paid once for some chunk of phone/text/data, that I could see, but lets be honest, and I'm curious-even if its 15 a month extra based on carrier, are you REALLY going to use the Gear S standalone that much each month to justify it? I doubt it, but I could be wrong.

Do you ever run or bike, etc. You can go with just the watch and not carry the phone.

There are a lot of cases where you might not want to take your phone.

Twice in the last few months I ended up at work and realized my phone wasn't. I didn't miss a call, a text, or even an email. Everything comes through.

It is a lot more convenient than I realized it would be.

Oh I don't doubt it. But my phone is Verizon and my Gear S is ATT. So the extra plan cost isn't worth it. Trust me, if I could have gotten the Verizon version for the amount I paid for the ATT one it'd be a different matter.

To have data it needs to be on the carrier you are with. You can't use an AT&T with Verizon

Only Bluetooth. So why not just get a Bluetooth enabled smart watch ?

That's not true. If you have an AT&T watch and Verizon phone, as long as you have an AT&T plan on the watch, it will work just fine.

The only thing I can see the standalone featuring being good for is going to the gym or running. I never forget my phone. In the last year I have forgotten it once and that was only to work where I don't need it.

Yeah if I got an AT&T plan, it would work standalone but that is more money. Still haven't figured out what I want to do yet. I was thinking about getting the one linked above but I may wait to see what Verizon does with the price.

There is no guarantee it will work with Tmobile's wearable plan.
Been there and done that.
Some have it working and some have not.
google MM#6/phone not allowed error.
Do your due diligence before forking out for it.

your options are h20 mobile or harbor mobile (both AT&T MVNOs)
am using it on h20 mobile 10$ pay as you go for when i have to.. calls and text work, but not data.

regards,
asmd.

So, with an AT&T watch and Verizon phone, I can make calls on the watch using Bluetooth?
