AT&T HTC One M8 4.4.4 MMS/Group Messaging Issues

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, folks...

I've gotten a warranty replacement phone, then updated to 4.4.4. then did a factory reset. and gotten a new SIM card since the original problem... And it is with a heavy heart that I report that I am still experiencing the same issue.

I've installed and uninstalled third-party messaging apps (Textra, GO SMS) and used regular stock apps, I've tried every setting combination I could on the stock messaging app for MMS. The phone and/or the service just keeps letting me down.

I really don't know what to do from here. I've gotten suggestions on calling AT&T customer service to ask them to reset my network? I don't even know if that's a thing that they do. I'm dumbfounded, absolutely dumbfounded..

Ah dang. Sorry to hear! Hmm. I know they can some how relocate your home tower, they've done that before for me but I don't think that would help? Definitely worth a shot. Mine has been fine ever since my replacement, maybe I just got lucky. Hope it works, if so, let me know!

I called ATT about a week ago. They changed some things on their end. It worked for a few days but now I'm back to losing random MMS texts. I didn't get a warranty replacement or a new SIM, I did do a factory reset before calling them though. Going to have to give them a call again

Thanks for CrazyCamel369#AC's remind. I am AT&T user. My friends are having Chinese New Year vacation now.We will do some testings next 2 weeks.

BTW, I also see a thread discuss about this issue on XDA forum.
The subject is 'HTC one m8 4.4.4 Mms not working'.
Maybe some other people meet this issue, too.

Thank you so much.

So I wiped my cache partition, and this seemed to resolve it for a little while, but then my group messages started vanishing again. The most frustrating part is that some group mms come through. There seems to be no pattern as to who I get the messages from... Sometimes iPhone 6 users don't come through, sometimes iPhone 5, sometimes Android. I've tried stock messaging, hello, hangouts, makes no difference.

This is incredibly frustrating, and I'm not sure what else there is to do besides abandon group messaging altogether! I've had to switch all of my group messages over to hangouts using email address just to make sure that I don't miss anything.

Have you tried having the other people on their ends to delete the group message thread you're in and start a new one? I have my friends and relatives do that and I haven't had an issue yet. Maybe that'll help!

I don't think this is the issue because I've had new group message threads started post-software update and it still happened.

I've been on the phone with AT&T a couple times and all they've been able to tell me is that it's not the network's fault and it HAS to be the phone, which doesn't even make sense because this is a brand new phone.

I see I see. Well, I guess the most they can do is send you another replacement. And hopefully a patch or lollipop gets pushed out to us.

My friend and I both have HTC one m8 on Verizon and both are experiencing same issue - won't do group texts and won't send picture messages. We both use the default "messages" app for texts.

I tested mine both on and off wifi and I cannot send picture messages or send group texts. I do receive group texts but they come in individually and I have to piece together the conversation. I haven't found any real solutions. I tried changing my default app to google hangouts and get the same errors.

Anyone with anything new? This kind of sucks. I get group messages a lot for work and this is becoming very annoying.

I had someone from att try and troubleshoot a bunch of things and nothing worked. He then called HTC who informed him that it was a known issue on their end and they're working to fix it. No time frame of when that will be. He also said that it's not worth getting a replacement bc it might have the same issue and they (htc) probably wouldn't issue one because it is a known issue that they're working to fix.

I am so annoyed and ready for a new phone. As much as I love my one this has ruined the experience and I will probably never buy htc again.

Thank you for the info. I guess it's just a waiting game now. It seemed from the other posts that this would be the end result.

Hey ya'll quick update. So another thing you guys can try is maybe disabling the AT&T backup and sync for text messages. Maybe that's causing issues?

For me, mine's still fine but I got really bored and decided to root and flash the developer edition over to my phone so now I'm on lollipop. Lemme tell ya, it's amazingly smooth without all the at&t bloatware and my battery life is a ton better.

How bad was it to do the root and flash the dev edition? I've always been tempted, but never had the stones to do it for fear of bricking the phone. Any good how-to's out there?

If you haven't done it before, then do a lot of reading before you start. You're risking losing your warranty and possibly bricking your phone. But it's very easy to do, especially now people have created applications that pretty much do all the windows command prompts for you. I'll link you the guides I've used.

I used this to unlock my bootloader, flash a customer recovery and then root the device [TOOL] WinDroid Universal Android Toolkit | … | AT&T HTC One (M8) | XDA Forums

Then you'll need to be S-Off. This is going to cost you $25 because there's only one method that works currently and they're charging you for it. SunShine S-Off / Unlock - Motorola & HTC Bootloader Unlock

The guide I used to get the developer edition was this one, follow everything carefully and you'll be fine. It's a simple task
[GUIDE] [S-OFF] Update from Almost Anything … | HTC One (M8) | XDA Forums

Once you flash to that, you'll be running official stock Developer HTC One M8. That means you'll get updates as soon as HTC releases them! It's awesome. Make sure to do a backup of everything on your internal memory because these steps will indeed erase everything. Good luck!

Here's the route I took for a full conversion to the Dev edition from at&t.

Unlocked boot loader via HTCDev.com.
Then sunshine for s-off. No need to root for sunshine!
Changed the CID to Dev edition.
Then the official ruu from HTC.
Done.

I delayed the upgraded until last week and now my group chats don't work either.

I read this thread.

I went to the AT&T store and told them about all the things that you all already tried on this thread. Eventually they got me to some tech guy over the phone who told me to turn off "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode", which is a new-ish feature that is not supported everywhere. And then he said to wait for 24 hours to see if that helped.

I figured I'd post it here and we can all give it a shot. If it doesn't work, I'll have more ammo for my (or your) return trip to the store.

HTC One M8: Settings -> Mobile data -> (bottom checkbox on list) Enhanced 4G LTE Mode --> turn it off.

the tech said all this check box does (when working correctly) is give a slightly clearly sound when on a normal voice call with someone else who also has an Enhanced 4G LTE Mode phone (and he said there were only 5 phones on the market that actually even support this feature and that only some select big-cities have the network to support this feature.... I'm in Las Vegas BTW.)

So I'm giving that a try... so far.. our test chats have worked. (fingers crossed)

Sweet! Keep us posted with this! If that's the fix then it's at least an easy one.

Hello, I have run in this problem as well. I contacted AT&T and after a few phone calls they told me to call HTC. Here's the email i was sent.

This is the basic trouble shooting that you may try.

Clearing Cache Partition from Recovery

Boot into bootloader by pressing and holding the low volume button and then also press and hold the power button, let go buttons when a white screen is shown.

Navigate to “Recovery” using volume buttons, then press power to select.
The screen will change to display a phone on its back, with the update symbol above it.

Momentarily it will change to an image of a phone with a red triangle and exclamation mark.

Press and hold the volume up button. While continuing to hold the volume up button, briefly press and release the power button. You will see a menu with blue letters.
A new screen will give you options like Reboot system now, Wipe Cache partition, and Wipe Data/Factory Reset.

(Pressing the power button for too long will cause the phone to reboot.)

Navigate to “Wipe cache partition” using the volume down button and select with Power.

Navigate to “Reboot Phone” with the volume buttons and select with power.

Also you need to set the phone to safe mode.

1. Press and hold the power button and then an option to power off will be shown on the screen.
2. Put your finger and hold it on the power off option.
3. Restart your phone on safe mode.

Anyone know if this works? Also do I need to put it in Safe mode first before doing clearing the cache?

thanks
