Hey...I just got a text msg from AT&T saying that I've got an "important software update" for my Samsung Captivate AKA Samsung Galaxy S. It says it the Gingerbread 2.3 Update. Is this for real? I thought they said "Sorry...No Updates" for my phone. Anyone else get this text? ...should I be excited?...or Worried that's it an early April Fools joke?

Well I went ahead and bit the bullet and upgraded my phone tonight...my Samsung Galaxy S SGH-i897 from AT&T...and the text i got and the upgrade are legit. AND I use to not be able to take advantage of uploading free apps from Amazon and now I can:eek:...S-W-E-E-T-N-E-S-S. That capability alone was worth the upgrade.

Thanks Samsung and At&t. :)

i did the update and my phone is working great! i had issues all over the place after the froyo update and this fixed them all, like my battery would just about last the day with light use and now with heavy use no issues and the boot up is a lot faster and it seems that games run a little smoother. hope that helps.

did anyone else have problems with the phone continuously shutting off and restarting even after doing a factory reset :(

I've been on the Gingerbread update for about a month now. Mostly runs smooth with one apparent exception. Any time I plug in or unplug the USB cable I get a "Tethering Manager stopped working" and Force Close message. If I don't respond it usually locks up and I have to do a reset or pull the battery. I'm just getting started on a search for a cure. My phone is Build #1009, an oddity as I understand it.

On another note, the battery life has greatly improved. But, can't say I like some of the new interface. I'll just get used to it..again.

@ OregonCaptive, Mine too! It is really ticking me off I searched and some have said it would go away with a factory reset and restore, but mine kept on giving the same error after I updated. Others said I should root it and turn the Tethering Manager off, but I haven't been able to root my device. This was my last chance search before I factory reset and deleted Gingerbread.

I have an AT&T Captivate i897 running Gingerbread...for now. Let me know if you find a fix.

This worked for me! After MONTHS of searching... It was so simple. I hope it works for you!

Just found this non-reset method to fix the tethering issues. Don't know if it works, but I'm giving it a shot.

=======================================

Many people have been receiving a Tethering Error Pop Up message on their Samsung Captivate mobile devices after updating to the 2.3 Gingerbread. I myself have been having this problem every time I unplug my device from a charge.

Here is how I fixed the problem without having to do a factory reset.

Plug the device into your computer (I'm using a laptop running on Windows 7 64-bit) via micro usb cable, next you will see "select USB mode"
don't select any option, instead hit the back button which will take you to your Home Screen

Now select settings --> wireless and network --> tethering and portable hot spots --> check USB tethering.

Now wait for Windows to install the device driver Samsung Android USB NDIS Network Device. Once the drivers are installed just disconnect your device from the computer. That's it, problem should be solved and no factory reset required.

Hopefully this will work for you too, please let me know how or if it works for you.

Hope it works.
