I bought Att HTC Jetstream on ebay. Activated $30 3 GB plan, sold Jetstream for the same money, used SIM in my Nexus 4 with no problem. Was making and receiving calls and texts using google voice and Talkaton application.

Another alternative is to just use a hotspot. Verizon and AT&T are $50 for 5GB while T-Mobile is 2GB for $30 I think.

You can always take your chance with Sim card swapping but you need to keep an eye on your account for they do add payed features to your phone such as a voice plan. You can reduce or eliminate those risks by using an mnvo service which is prepaid.

I'm still waiting to find prepaid mnvo plans for mifi devices.

Honestly, that is probably a part of why. Public companies (which every company you mentioned is) main responsibility is to make their share holders money. Merging would do that, but would never be approved.

An odd position to take considering that the phone system in this country started with a congressional act that monopolized the system under Bell. It was only significant later that it was broken into pieces by congress. As we can see now it is nearly a monopoly again. Stating it is the governments responsibility to ensure a free market within a system created by the government to be a monopoly seems to defy common sense.

Well, a lot of things that have been done by our government do well and truly defy common sense, so...

However, I have found that socialists commonly do defy common sense in economics.

That is just partially correct. There are ways to get only data sims and use them in your phone. I was able to successfully do just that and with AT&T to be precise.

Technically smartphones are not supported, but I would imagine that getting it to work should be as simple as an APN change.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Its quite obvious what some people will do to avoid paying their fair share (free data plans for the masses - let the rich pay for or internet - sounds like something out of our illustrious leader).

To respond, unlimited data grandfathered in. Not sure why this happened but it did. The issue is fixed for now.

All the squabbling over theories aside, would you care to share what the actual problem was and how the issue was resolved? I'm also curious what you mean when you say "for now".

I hope this means AT&T did the right thing and reactivated your phone, but as someone interested in buying a Nexus 4 and going on a month-to-month AT&T plan, I'd like to know for sure, please.

Correct, I was using the same APN as on my tablet. Broadband, that is APN settings. Also, it is important to use non branded phone which, Nexus is perfect for. ATT recognizes it as a dumb device.

No Chetan, I do not work for AT&T. I am an attorney and self-employed. I am now retired. I do have an internet account with AT&T (a dongle that has a separate telephone number assigned to it). You see I saw so many cheaters in my practice of law, and I simply do not want to be one of them. You can see for yourself that there are quite a few here that are attempting to do anything that they can to avoid paying their fair share. As an attorney, I got sort of upset and tired of freeloaders. Just my opinion, OK?

When I first got my Nexus 7, it came with an AT&T sim. I activated it but the service was so slow that it was unusable while at home. I ended up using that sim in my 4S for a few days just to try and use up the data but it did work. I had to use the broadband APN for it to work on the phone. I then got a T-Mobile sim and activated it in the Nexus 7. I also tried it in my 4S and Nexus 4 and it too worked with the right APN. You can then use an app for making calls.

Am I the only one out there that doesn't "activate" phones through AT&T??! Every time I switch devices, I simply take the SIM card out and put it in the new phone. The only time I had an issue was when I went from iPhone 4 to the Samsung Galaxy S II. The data wasn't working and that's because I blanked out and forgot that I needed a 4G SIM card and mine was only 3G. I went to an AT&T store to explain this and the guy charged me for a new SIM activation which was like $30 and I was out the door in 30 minutes. He even made sure my 3G unlimited data plan was grandfathered in to the 4G LTE Unlimited Plan!

When I bought my Nexus 4, I just took the SIM out of my S II, chopped the sides off to make it a micro SIM and I was running fine with HSPA+. For those of you claiming that the Nexus 4 is an unsupported phone by AT&T, please define "unsupported" because if you're talking about the device not working on the network, you're obviously wrong since so many of us have no issues with it. If you mean it's a device that AT&T can't answer tech questions about, then yes you are correct. But that's expected since you can only get the Nexus 4 from Google...why would anyone be asking AT&T about a phone that Google sells when it's sole purpose is to be unlocked and carrier-free?? Just swap the SIM card and your account will automatically be updated with the IMEI number from the new phone. You don't have to call or talk to anyone....it's instant.

I would like to know exactly what happened with the OP. I bought my Nexus 4, went straight to the AT&T store and they put a SIM card in it and activated the phone with no hassle. So it can't be because the phone is unsupported. There had to be something going on with his usage. Because it couldn't have been the phone.

Yes it would. AT&T does not support the Nexus 4. Their system does not recognize the IMEI. AT&T considers it an unsupported device. I know this because I took mine to the AT&T Store to get it activated. Idk why his phone was shut off, but it wasn't because of no data plan. AT&T would have automatically enrolled him in one.
