At&t shut my Nexus down

There was a time when the data plan for iPhone was different but that was only because at the time other phones used a different data plan...MediaNet I think it was called. When iPhone came in, a lot was changing and shortly after when smartphones started becoming commonplace, the data plans just became synonymous. So now the only difference between smart devices is 3G and 4G networks.

My 3G SIM worked fine in my Galaxy SII as long as I only wanted to make phone calls! As for the $30 charge...I was pissed about it, but since they left me with my unlimited data plan, I felt better about it.

I just discovered something interesting...I'm not receiving any messages from people with iPhones. They are still seeing me as connected on iMessage, so their messages to me are going into the 'iCloud' and never returning. I can send to them, and it shows up as a plain text message - but their response still goes out as an attempted iMessage. I'm going to go to the AT&T store to see if there's a setting in the network that was missed.

You have to disable your imessage on the apple account. It will intercept by default. Do you have any other apple devices?

Transmitted through spacetime.

No, just the old iPhone - but it is still up/running, basically as an iPod Touch. I'll go home and disable iMessage and then see how it works. Thanks!

I would think At&t would want to have people bringing unlocked phones to their network. This saves them the cost of paying for part of a phone when a customer upgrades or signs a new contract. Not sure why they would shut your account down when the Nexus 4 is compatible with the At&t network.

Some phones -- as well as USB modems and other cellular devices -- can cause problems. For example, if a device can't maintain a certain link budget, customers will have a lot of dropped calls, tiling video, slow browsing, etc. Customers with better devices also would have problems because an unnecessary amount of network resources will be tied up trying to serve the poor-performing devices.

I'm not saying that that was the case here, but there's a reason why operators have certification processes for mobile devices that plan to use their network, regardless of whether they or a third party sells them. Those cert tests can get pretty involved, and it's not uncommon for a device to fail the first time or two. The GSM ops have always had it tougher than their CDMA counterparts because the SIM architecture, plus the prevalence of quand-band GSM and penta-band UMTS devices, makes it so easy for customers to change operators.

It took 96 days to think up that zinger?

I didn't resurrect the thread, but, no, it took about thirteen and three quarters of a second to compose my wit into my prior post.

It's an ongoing thread now, and it wasn't I that brought this up; it's the first I've seen of this thread.

sounds perfectly fine to want phone service, no data and just use wifi. I don't see the issue.

I don't think AT&T allows anyone to have post-paid service for a smartphone without a data plan. If you try to sneak a smartphone onto their network, I believe they will add a data plan automatically.

Things are a little different on the prepaid side. You can put a smartphone on a prepaid plan with no data for $25/month and just use Wi-Fi.

Interesting that you describe it that way. I was wondering if that's something I can remove or be worried about eventually having peel off due to normal wear and tear.

I just answered my own question. I left the factory film on the back, and after putting it in my pocket this afternoon, the film caught and peeled off, along with the IMEI sticker.

Who here is a freeloader? Who was cheating?

I sure hope you didn't make these kinds of asinine assumptions during your career as an attorney.

A lot of people in this thread think the OP (tmx31415) was cheating AT&T somehow, and that's why AT&T shut down the OP's service. AT&T later restored it, but we don't know what the problem was in the first place and what was done to fix it.
