AT&T smartphone without purchasing a data plan

If your contract is up it may be time to give Straight Talk a look. They will sell you a SIM card for for your existing AT&T phones. If you are looking for new phones then may I suggest Ting. Their service uses the Sprint network. What is unique about Ting is each device you use on their network is $6 plus whatever amount of talk+text+data you choose. These are pooled so if you add a device you only add $6 to your monthly bill. But what I really like and can't wait for my existing contract to expire is their version of rollover. Say you pick the 2Gb data for $45 to use amongst your 3 devices but find out you are only using 980Mb...Ting will credit the difference between the 2Gb and 1Gb plan ($18) and automatically drop you to the 1Gb plan for the next month. Same goes with voice+data. It works the other way as well so no overage fees if you use more than you expected. It all sounds too good to be true but I haven't seen any real complaints from customers. You do pay for the phones. They have a decent selection of Android phones including the Galaxy S III and Note II but no iPhone or BlackBerry devices for now. They just added the ability to bring certain Sprint phones to their service as well.

I have a pantech ease which is a non smartphone and I just want a better p hone cause its battery charging has issues. I also have a Motorola Atrix smartphone that I quit using 3 months after I got it because AT&T was going to force me to pay for data when the only thing I do is text and send pics occasionally. Is there a way I can put my sim card in the Atrix and set it to only use wifi and not be billed for a data plan?

You can buy a Rogers (Canada) version of a smartphone that is compatible with at&t but wont be recognized as a smartphone because its not in at&t's smartphone imei database.

That way you can add medianet for $10 or no data at all if you prefer. Actually any gsm unlocked phone will work if you're not using data, it'll just run on the edge network if it doesn't have at&t 3g frequencies.

I use my Verizon Galaxy Note 2 on AT&T that way. I bought a cheap AT&T GoPhone from Best Best.(on sale for $9.99, the Samsung A157) Activated on a $2 daily plan. Put the SIM into the Verizon Galaxy Note 2 and it worked just fine. Threw away the cheap GoPhone. I originally just wanted to see if my Verizon Note 2 would work... it did... a couple of months later, I switched to AT&T's $60 unlimited plan.

The funny thing is that whenever I call AT&T's 611, it plays a recording that says something like "your phone is not recognized as a smartphone, would you like to hear about our smartphone plans?" (guess AT&T's system can't recognize a Verizon Galaxy Note 2? :D )

Right now I can get a Refurb Galaxy S3 from ATT for 9.99 as an upgrade to my 4 phone plan. In fact I ordered 2 last week. I'm thinking of getting another as I am eligible for another line upgrade. This line is just basic and uses no data. I know i will have to add a data plan to the new phone, but my intentions are to order the refurbed phone and sell it. Can i cancell the data plan and tell ATT I lost the phone and just go back to the same dumb phone plan after purchasing the S3?

You could grab a smartphone without a data plan for AT&T. This method will only work if you have a smartphone that's not listed in their database. When you put the sim card into a phone to activate it. The information is transfer over to AT&T and their system looks at your imei no. to determine if it's a smartphone or not and then will add the data plan accordingly. They probably have a hug database of smartphones in their system. So, the only effective way to get around this is to get a smartphone that is not listed or can't be identify. You could learn more about how to do this at can-you-use-a-smartphone-without-a-data-plan dot com. hope this helps.

Just disabling Access Data over Mobile Network should do the trick. If the phone has this feature disabled there is no way ANY wireless carrier can check what kind of phone is connected to. I did it with my new moto G over ATT. I had only cut the regular sim card to converted to mini sim card. I disabled the feature mentioned above BEFORE inserting the sim card. It worked just fine.
