AT&T Variant Wireless Charging - PMA Again or Qi?

I can confirm qi works fine on the at&t model as it's what I'm using and I installed a NeWisdom antenna on the battery cover and it works fine

You are correct. I got mine to work today. It's charging right now as I swype this.

I have AT&T version and it is Qi charging. Have the Quick Circle case AND the stick on receiver, from china. Using Qi charging dock no problems. In fact it's the Verizon Wireless 3 col Qi charger. But AT&T is Qi charging not powermat. for G4.

I have this experience to confirm the findings of this thread:

  • I have recently bought two supposedly "unlocked" G4s: model H811, which was manufactured to work with T-Mobile; and model H810, which works with ATT. I'm no phone geek, just a retail customer, so at the outset I assumed "unlocked" means you can put any GSM SIM in it and it will work. (Which is what all the sellers and service providers also say.) Not so: When I put my ATT chip into the H811, Multi-Messaging and a few smaller functions didn't work. However, my circle-case Qi charger worked fine. So I sent back the H811 and got an H810. Everything on the H810 works - except the circle case charger. When I put the phone on the charging stand (Itian A6), the stand's status light goes from red to blinking between blue and red - apparently indicating that the stand knows something has been placed on it, but not something it can actually charge. (When a device is successfully charging, the stand's status light glows steady blue.)
  • Also, I noticed this on an Amazon ad (https://www.amazon.com/NeWisdom®-Up...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU5265099) for a G4 charger antenna (note the boldfaced part): "NeWisdom® [Upgraded V2.0 Ultra Slim]LG G4 Qi Wireless charging IC Chip+NFC Antenna Sticker for LG G4 H815 US Cellular T-mobile H811 Verzion VS986 Sprint LS991 Korean Version F500 Battery back door cover or G4 flip case ,not support H810 H812 H818(G4 wireless chip)"

On the other hand, here's a post that claims "CONFIRMED: installing an aftermarket QI sticker on AT&T H810 works!" (https://www.reddit.com/r/lgg4/comments/3a7hty/confirmed_installing_an_aftermarket_qi_sticker_on/). The sticker that supposedly works is https://www.amazon.com/RECEIVER-WIR...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU5265099.

So, ????

Here's the text of a chat I just had with AT&T, which seems to confirm that (a) the H810 won't work with Qi chargers, and (b) AT&T chatters are clueless on this matter:

Your chat transcript:
Jessica : Welcome to AT&T Chat. How may we help you today?
Me : I just bought a LG G4 H810 to use with my ATT account. I find that the circle-case charger I also bought doesn't work on a Qi charger. Is there any wireless charger for the H810 that does work with Qi? Wireless charging is a must-have for me, and I would rather not have to return this phone and/or find a different carrier.
Jessica : Ken, in this moment we have the Belkin Wireless Charging Pad
Jessica : I was checking, and this wireless charger is able to work with all the LG series
Jessica : I can send you the link in order to check it
Me : Yes, please.
Me : But I'm also asking whether there is any wireless charging antenna that i can attach to the H810 that will work with the many charging stands I already have that use the Qi standard? (Rather than the PMA standard.)
Jessica : ok, I see
Jessica : Ken, I can connect you with our specialist department
...
Steve : Hi Ken! This is Steve. I will be happy to assist you today.
Me : Hi Steve. Have you read the chat so far?
Steve : I was. Let's look at those charging options that LG has.
Steve : While it seems that circle charger does seem to be the most prominent Qi charger available, I see mentions of a rigged case that was being used.
Me : I have a circle case that includes the Qi antenna. It works OK on a LG G4 H811 that I had, but when I put the same case onto my LG G4 model 810 (the only one that works with ATT as a carrier) it doesn't work.
Steve : There are replacement stickers that may help with that case to charger connection. I was looking at some references to cases out of the UK in the Android forums, but no one is saying which case.
Steve : You can reach out to LG at 800-793-8896 or LG: Mobile Devices, Home Entertainment & Appliances | LG USA to see if they may have some additional recommendations.
Me : There are sticker-antennas you can get that go inside the LGG4 case. But the talk on the forums (http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg-g4/532670-t-variant-wireless-charging-pma-again-qi.html) is that NO Qi antenna will work with the ATT model of LGG4. I'm entering this chat in hopes that that is not true, but I think it's confirming that it is true. Right?
Me : If so I would appreciate your passing on to the ATT powers-that-be that this is a dumb thing for them to be doing to their customers. None of your competitors are doing it. See the above forum thread for more.
Steve : We do not support the wireless charging with that device. These devices may be capable though. With that charging, we would suggest contacting LG.
Me : Well, I guess that's as far as I can go with this chat. Thank you for the try.

Final note: On the page where AT&T is pushing its PMA charging case (for $60! four times the price of Qi charging cases), I entered the following question and got the following response:

Is it still true that this case only works with PMA chargers, not with Qi chargers? If so, when if ever will there be a version that works with Qi?

Howdy kenatsun,
That’s a great question and one best answered by LG!
Please visit LG Chat & Email | LG U.S.A and connect directly with LG.
They will be able to answer your product questions and possibly advise you of any new products that might be coming out to fit your needs.

In other words, forget about Qi charging ever happening on the G4. Hold your breath and wait for the G6.

Meanwhile, I've returned my G4.

Just for the record in case anyone is doing a search regarding the Samsung Galaxy S7. Just like the S6, the AT&T version does work with either PMA wireless charger (Samsung model anyway, EP-PG920A $50 at AT&T) or the Samsung Qi charger EP-PG920IBUGUS, abt $27 Amazon.
I was unable to find a definitive answer scouring the net, specs for the S7, and asking a salesman at an AT&T store, if a less expensive Qi charger would work for my AT&T branded Samsung Galaxy S7. So I purchased the PMA version and later, after getting an unexpected Amazon Gift Card, purchased a Samsung Qi charger. Both work seamlessly. No issues, no heat, no pinging when fully charged. Did not measure time to full charge since I use the chargers overnight.

G4 is QI compliant with the correct charger and replacement back cover.

The G4 that's not compliant is the model H810, which was made for AT&T. The ones you are showing don't claim to work on the H810. The case is advertised as being for the BC472 model, which I know nothing about.

Most vendors of Qi antennas for the LG G4 (including the one where I bought mine: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU5275754) seem to be unaware of this limitation, though a few are discovering it and including a warning in their listings.

Here is an interesting example from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/RECEIVER-WIR...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU5275754). This listing's headline says "IC CHIP RECEIVER SUPPORT NFC & QI WIRELESS CHARGING FOR LG G4 VS986 H810 H811 Verizon Charger Battery Sticker Attachment NFC Antennae", but the following bullet point has been added to the product description: "Not work with H810 TMOBILE H815 US CELLULAR".

For that matter, the vendors of "unlocked" LG G4 H810 phones (including the eBay seller where I bought mine) seem to be unaware of the problem.

Learn something everyday. Thanks. Was totally unaware of that.

Ok - so it seems that the AT&T version of the LG G4 doesn't support Qi. It uses PMA (Powermat). Got it.

I have the H810 (AT&T version). Is there an equivalent to the Qi sticker that I can attach to the inside back cover of my phone to allow it to work on a PMA charger? I have tried searching online for one, but can't find one. Admittedly, I might not be searching in the right place.

Is my only option to purchase an actual LG G4 case that is Powermat compatible?
