I'm finally ready to buy the Edge.

However, every promotion from my current carrier, AT&T, requires the addition of another line.

I've been a customer for at least 10 years & get the distinct feeling that they have no wish to work with me. It's only my wife & me so I don't need another line. They won't budge.

Is there validity in switching to Verizon or will I face the same roadblocks with them?

Best buy has a promo right now that if you buy S7 edge for AT&T, VZW, or Sprint they'll give you $150 gift card on the spot. $200 if you get the pink gold. No new line required. Just upgrade existing line and put in installment plan. I just got me an edge on this Sunday and looking at the site now, it's still going on. So you can stick with AT&T and get the deal or switch to Verizon and get it. Either way

And in regards to being with them for 10 years. It's unfortunately that carriers tend to offer better deals to new customers. In their eyes, opening new lines of service is better than maintenance on existing. You can experience this with any carrier. Not just AT&T. But head over to best buy and walk out today with your device and some extra cash to buy accessories or something else.

Thanks very much for the guidance. Looks like BB is the route to go.

Just make sure you pull the trigger soon. When I went the guy said the promo was supposed to end tomorrow (Labor day at that time). But it's still up on their site so still good for now. You can order online for store pickup as well.

Sam's club will give you a $150 gift card for getting any of the S7 line (S7, S7E or S7 Active). Promo ends the 18th I believe for AT&T, not sure about Verizon.
