AT&T's new rates are killing me!

I've been with AT&T for years. I have 3 lines and was paying $195 a month. That was with 4GB of data. Now I pay $140 and have 10GB. I don't have to go with the Next program. I'll be eligible for upgrade next month.

PS... I get a 22% discount with work.

You don't have to go to next but you won't get subsidized phone pricing at att $145 (non discounted rate) for 3 phones on msv 10gb tier

You mean you didn't have to go with the next program.. Because you switched and already had your phone. Once you go to your new phones you will have to get them on Next.. Or full price.

You can also pay $40/mo line access charge per smartphone while on contract.

I can still upgrade the old way and get a discounted phone. With Next, you can get the phone for 0 down, pay monthly for the phone, no upgrade fee, and cancel your contract at any time. Although you have to pay the remaining balance on your phone at cancelation.

So yes, you don't have to go with the Next program.

See for yourself. Go to https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...l=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.att.com%2F&token=YbsWCoBK and try to get a phone. You'll see the option to select Next, 2 year contract, or no annual contract.

Yes you can upgrade the old way and get discounted phone. But you would have to pay $25 more per line (assuming that you are on a 10gb or higher plan)

I guess we'll find out on the 22nd. That's when the site says I can upgrade.

Dpham is right. If you do the contract discounted price they will add that 25 on per line. They aren't going to give that big of discount to the plan and let you get it on contract price.. It's one or the other.

After looking into it further. I found the fine print. Right now, I'm paying $15 per line. As of 2/1/14, they allowed current contract holders to take advantage of the $25 discount.

If I update, I have to pay the discounted price for the phone, the upgrade fee, and $40 per line. But if I go with Next 18, I pay $15 plus $25 for the phone. Essentially, I go back to paying what I was paying before 2/1, and get a free $650.00 phone and an additional 6GB of data.

And after actually going through and reading this entire thread, it sounds like VZW is following suit.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention guys. I would have been pissed when I found out the hard way.

Glad to be of service. The plan isn't bad, just not the huge savings that some people were expecting especially those wanting high end phones

Finally agreed. :)

Sorry if the thread was distracting to the Verizon forum/section...but honestly, I think it was a worthwhile discussion.

Thanks all!

I'd take a look at their coverage as well. Att in my area is great! Right now myself and the girlfriend are on the same account and with my employee discount our plan comes to $110 a month for 10 gigs of data and the rest is unlimited. Discounts ONLY come off the base $100 of the plan. (In case you wanted to know.)

This is why I'm thinking of switching to att. On verizon now and have the latest phones. If I switch to the new more plans with 10 GB I pay $40 for talk and text and $100 for data which increases my bill. They won't let me switch to more plan because I'm a current customer unless I go by new phones on the edge program.

Oh and Verizon coverage in the Chicago area isn't so good.

That's where I'm lost. Verizon works better than any carrier in the city (including by Union Station) and in the suburbs for me. TMobile and Sprint struggle and ATT is decent but not as good. If I go further towards NIU the coverage on Verizon is superb but I don't know how the rest are.

How can there be such a big difference on the same network?

Go to the north shore/ north burbs. Was just by the Edens and Dundee road at a country club , Verizon barley worked if at all and att people were 3-5 bars and so was T-Mobile. Go to the outlet mall in Kenosha just over the border and you will see. Doesn't work in a lot of stores around here and att does.

Oh, I don't go by there ever so maybe that's why. Whatever works best for you is where you should be.

Plus, AT&T has greatly improved their network in many places as witnessed by family that has att
